E320cdi Woes

I still think a lot of your current problems are to do with the repairs rather than the car.... it's a shame as the v6 is superb IMO.. It has a few buggy expensive issues but on its day, it is a great car.

Stick with it but I would have the repair work looked at as I am guessing something has either been missed or not done right.

I'm going to get it fixed alright but when I can afford to get rid of it for something I'll find satisfactory it's for the chop. Lovely car when it works and all that but there are other cars including other mercs that would serve me just as well. I've gone from V8 petrols to 4 banger diesels and from 4 banger diesels to a large petrol BMW before. Not immune to a lesser car or a really high end, you take a car for what it is. I'd be fine in a 4pot 204 or a BMW. I'd have canned this car ages ago but when it runs well it is the best car I've ever had and probably will have, but it's by far the most troublesome.

I don't expect there to be a major issue just now but given my past record with this car I suspect it's only a matter of time before another issue crops up. I'll probably feel a whole lot better once I've had a good tour in the car and I can rave about its qualities for a change.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Steve, I don't really know what to make of it all tbh, is it just a 'bad' car?

Mine has been pretty faultless so far, but I suppose in the 3.5 years I've had it I've only covered approx 24,000 miles and the car is still only on approx 43,000, that said I can't imagine my very much stop/start style of journeys is going to be doing the engine any favours.

I don't really know what my long term plan for the car is, its a difficult one as I'm more than happy to keep it as long as it doesn't start going down a similar road . . .

I can't say I'm suprised to hear of a continuation of problems when you posted about the engine sounding different, I don't think I've ever heard anything from the turbo on mine.

Hope things work out for you!

Drive the car today up to a different garage. No EML light but same turbo noises. The fella gave me a lift to the station in it and noticed straight away the excess noise and hopes to have it on star later today. I showed him my old manifolds and he felt they were actually alright and in good order. Here hopes the fix is cheap, for a change...

Fingers crossed for a good / inexpensive result!

Agreed, get it put together properly and drive the wheels of it.

It's what you do best.

It was. The original indie in Ibrox failed to fit new seals around the piping from the turbo. Consequently full boost pressure was not being achieved delivering the fault.

No lasting damage has been done to my car and it's under a £110 to fix it, of which I'll aim to get reimbursed from "Mercedes specialist in Ibrox"

I really hope it is sorted for you Steve. I know how galling a long term problem car can be, and how it sucks the life out of you and out of your pie budget.

I'm off out for the team lunch tomorrow. This car has bled me so dry I'm having the burger not the fillet of beef.

In all seriousness nearly two months since it last drove without fault. That's up there with the worst forum failures.

I'm en route to get it and it's next proper run will be to Edinburgh the following weekend.

Hope all is good with it and your drive home is pleasurable.

Thats good news at last Steve, maybe your problems with the car are behind you(for now at least)& it hasn't cost you:cool:

I'm back with it. £104.99 out of pocket

The mechanic told me that the turbo wasn't sealed at the intake, and further up and as such wasn't even in the correct position. He's had to re drill a hole to fit it properly, such was the substandard state the turbo was left in.

It had leaked oil and would be leaking air/exhaust gases.

The stupid noises and smoking have gone.

With the new manifold and the turbo sealed up, it really flies. Hilarious as it is, I really don't need nor badly desire a car with this level of power so I'd hand on heart say i would not feel shorter changed with a "less powerful car".

Never, since I have owned this car, have I felt it perform the way it did tonight. It is relentlessly quick, biblically fast but in my tours up north, and mooching up and down motorways this level of performance is probably wasted.

And I still am not convinced by 7g but perhaps because my engine was never "quite right" perhaps that has been short changing the transmission which was designed and mapped for the full compliment of power, which blatantly over 38k miles my car has never made. Its much much more responsive, less laggy and I'd say maybe 5-10% more powerful.

Before you all laugh at me, I've never driven or been in a V6 E class other than a remapped one over 2 years ago. I've only driven a C320cdi and breifly been a passanger in Tim Kemps one. I really wouldn't know that mine was slightly less than perfect until now.

What a saga. So glad that you are getting some enjoyment out of the car at the moment.

Steve

I am SO pleased for you. I would imagine your car was in 'The Port' ?

Once you get some miles under your belt, your gearbox will start to re-learn. You might find that a revelation.

Keep us informed, your posts are always worthy of a read.

***, sounds like an excellent result and glad to hear it's finally sorted out. Hopefully you'll now have a decent spell of trouble free motoring.

My feelings too whilst owning my 175bhp V6 diesel. Great for the <5% of the time I used the performance, but for the other 95% of the time I was paying for the reduced fuel economy (~40mpg) and ultimate unreliability of my car.

Now I've only a 140bhp 4-cylinder car and don't miss the power but am certainly enjoying the near 60mpg. OK, it's not a perfect car, smaller and less comfortable than the previous one, but nothing to make me feel I've bad a bad decision.

So all I'm say is, if you do go a C220 I think it's still offers sufficient performance and comfort, but in theory your bank balance will appreciate the change.

Power is good - never underestimate having more power than you normally need. It'll be there, lurking in the background.

There is a vast difference between driving and motoring.

^Why not do an autobox reset now the engines right Steve(prepare to fall in love with the 7g though;)).
