E350 EQ Boost

You have a beautiful car there. I couldn’t agree more about it being the best car I’ve ever owned. Puts a smile on my face every day.

Loving your choice of dash display set up. I find myself chasing those green leaf miles seeing where the EQ boost has been active as an economy thing. My *I set up is for Eco engine and everything else on sport to get the best ride and the best economy. Gliding mode is awesome - knowing the engine is cut off as I cruise up and down the A1 and ready for Power at the mere flick of the accelerator.
Indeed. I don’t really pay much attention to the consumption but like to have it there cause it looks high tech lol. I don’t do much mileage these days so it never really gets past 31mpg. I only chose the 350 because I couldn’t afford the 450 and the 300 was too slow because I had the c300 cab before this one and it was the same power output but lighter so quicker. The 350 is faster because of the 300bhp vs 245 in the 300 so I kept the quickness. Don’t know if you’ve got it but I specced the driving assistance package and that is witchcraft lol. It’s amazing how it drives itself and knows when you’re going to turn etc and reads the map to see how tight the bends are. Only thing it can’t see are traffic lights etc and speed bumps lol.
I have the newest C class and it's Distronic driving 'semi auto pilot' is supposed to work the same - reading map data to slow down when approaching curves etc.

However, I don't really notice the car doing this to great effect. Do I need to program and set a destination in the sat nav for it to read the maps more effectively so it knows where I am going? as I never use the on board sat nav.
hi. I don’t have to have a destination programmed for it to work. All I do is set the cruise control and it does it’s thing. If I then indicate left or right, it brakes and prepares for the turn knowing from the map how far the turning is ahead. I have to steer round the corner then it accelerates again. If I have a route entered I don’t have to indicate for it to brake it knows it’s coming from the route. You still have to do most of the steering. The steering assist is more for motorways not sharp turns etc. If I am approaching a roundabout with no route just cruise control, it will brake but alert for me to steer the exit I want. It’s not 100% autonomous, I do tend to brake or take over if I’m approaching more intricate manoeuvres. Hope that helps.

Very nice (both) but I agree with Roger on the badging. Why bother at all now if a 350 is a two litre

Mine was debadged when I got it and am happy with that, if I floor it they will hear its not a four pot.

The EQ boost is very interesting though as a concept, will be interested in how the cars mature.
Am I right in understanding that they cannot run on electric alone though?

That would be correct as I understand it. Altho Mercedes make great play of their transmission-line motor I expect the instant boost supplied by the electrically driven supercharger may also play a large part in the feel of how the car drives [The electric auxiliary compressor eliminates turbo lag, its internal fan spooling to 70,000 revs in a third of a second, supplying eight pounds of boost to either the exhaust-gas-driven turbocharger or directly to the engine]
Don't know if any of the 4 cylinder engines have this feature or not?

Tech’splaining: What is Mercedes-Benz EQ Boost?

electric supercharger only on 53 AMG models, I think

The 350 and 450 don’t have the supercharger. The system does add power on pull away to eliminate turbo lag but only around 14bhp. It’s more for economy. I enjoy it on mine. No cranking on the engine start and I get a bit more oomph when giving it the beans :)

Being that it has the same engine as the A35 - How does it sound, OP?

Talking of confusing badges, the new all electric Porsche Taycan model range is available as either a Turbo, or a Turbo S. Work that one out!

Because engines have advanced slightly over the years... we have two litre engines pushing over 400bhp now, they can’t all be badged 200

The nomenclature relates to their output and what position that puts them in the range, not the engine size.

Chap on Pistonheads has had an E350 EQ delivered and it has an E200 badge on the bootlid!

...to surprise people at traffic lights?

Really? That just highlights the stupidity of it all now. I didn't realise 350s were 2-litre, I assumed they might be 3-litres - mind you I didn't realise that the new A-Class petrols were only 1.3 litres. Possibly the same engine as in Renaults / Nissans as well?

I followed an Audi the other day, something like a 35Tsi. Absolutely no idea what size engine, so why not just do away with all the nomenclature and debadge everything, or do people get some sort of kudos from having a '45', a '57.5' or a '65'.

It used to be obvious, my old 450SLC was a 4.5 litre, whereas a 350SLC was a 3.5litre. Easy. Even one of my local dealer's salesmen said he gets confused by it all and they just deal with one brand. Even politicians now talk about 'turbocharging' the economy, so it's just waffle.

The story used to be that in the UK most debadged cars were the smaller-engined ones in the range, whereas in Germany it tended to be the larger, or largest, engined versions that were debadged.

Hi all, first post. Just ordered a new E350 Coupe and am looking forward to an April delivery.

I have a question for other E350 EQ Boost owners. Do you have something called Eco Assist? I noticed it mentioned in the manual (see image) but didn’t see it when test driving a demonstrator last week. The demo did not have the Driving Assist package which I have ordered - not sure if that makes a difference.

Anyway, even my brief test drive showed this was a fantastic engine - smooth and quick.

Hi. The eco assist only appears when you’re in eco mode and it is little icons that pop up on the assistance graphic that tells you when to lift off because you are approaching a roundabout or a reduced speed limit or junction etc. It’s quite handy I guess if you want to save as much fuel as possible but I just love it for the fact it reads the satnav map and the cars in front. You will LOVE the driving assistance pack. It’s is amazing how it works so well. Feel free to ask any other questions you have as I have had mine since April 2019 ( first run of the eq boosts). Best car I’ve ever bought!

Thanks for the swift response.

I am coming from an E220d saloon with Driving Assist. Also a great engine and I have gotten used to the self driving capabilities. I am looking forward to the enhanced package (eg route adaption) which will be icing on the cake.

We researched and tested a few cars thinking we would need a change but kept coming back to the E-Coupe. My wife would always comment, when we got back into our E-class, that this was nicer than the one we had tested. The E-class interior is just special.

I wanted something a little more sporty and wanted an engine with a little more grunt to suit. Decided to try the 350 eq boost and fell in love with it. I know I am going to take a hit on the mpg when compared to the 220d so am interested in saving a little in eco mode when on the long runs.

Thanks again.

I’m averaging 30mpg to 35mpg on normal local trips once the engine’s warm and about 40 to 45mpg on the open road in eco mode. In sport+ about 23 to 25 mpg but I’m grinning and giggling the entire time . I wanted the 450 or e53 but couldn’t justify the cost just for the engine so had to compromise on the 350eq which is plenty quick enough.

Those mpg figures are better than I was expecting. I got 40mog on the short motorway test I did and thought ‘good enough’ even coming from the 55mpg average (all driving) I get now.

You are right, the performance and sound when in Sport+ is addictive. Even made my wife, who is most certainly not interested in cars, say this is fun! It has plenty of power and I think suits the coupe/cabriolet both on refinement and power. It is noticeably smoother and quieter than the diesel 220d and that is very good engine which I have been more than pleased with.

Thanks again.
