I have the opportunity of acquiring a nice, low mileage W210 1996 E36, however, having just checked the Vin No on the Russian site it comes up as a E320, albeit with all of the AMG bodykit, wheels being shown on the specification options.

Is this due to the fact that all E36's came off the production line as E320's and were subsequently converted?

Car seems to be the real deal, ie engine cover is AMG, dash dials are AMG, etc etc.

Any thoughts.

If my understanding is right, the E36 is a stroked E320, so it would make sense.

IIRC some Brabus - where a different engine completely is inserted - can show up as a base model.

Wasn't the E36 engine exactly the same as the C36 engine? which was a stroked C280/E280 Engine?

210 E36's were dealership cars were't they? Sold as E36 models, no ?

I would have expected it to come up as an e36, but i don't know enough about them.

cheers

I just checked mine on the Russian site and it too comes up as an E320. The logbook says E36 though and it definitely is an E36. Strange.

Cheers for that, so it would appear that they are designated as E320 on the build sheet and are then registered as E36's on the log book when they came into the UK.

Can't be, the 210 E320 petrol was a V6 engine IIRC. The E36 an I6. The engine is based on the I6 seen in the 208 280 car.

Its a shame MB no longer do a petrol I6 to be fair. Such nice engines, better than a V8 IMHO

The early W210 E320s were I6. There isn't that much difference between an E320 Avantgarde and an E36 to be honest.

But my E36 w124's come up on the data card as E36's?

Hi,
208 280 = Clk 280, there was never such a beast, the straight 6 engine was replaced by the V engine approx, 1997, personally think a straight 6 engine is better than a V6, but I would have to disagree regarding being better than a V8.

Typo, meant a 202 280. I believe the early ones were I6, and the C36 was the same engine but extra CC. Its the same engine thats in the 210 36 AMG but never knew that early 210 320's were I6 engined

Suppose my comment re V8 vs I6 is purely opinion (and a minority one as most prefer the V8 noise-I prefer the wail and linear power of an I6) I also have happy memories of giving an I6 a good canning thru some of the best roads scotland has to offer, and its a good memory to have :D

Technically an I6 is more balanced than a V8 and you'll get precious little vibration in a car with an I6, but a V8 will always have a detectable wobble and that woofle, I find it too gruff, and prefer the more tuneful 6 pots. But now a V8 tune would be bliss, 4 pot derv aint that nice a sound but the whistle of the turbo is cool (you need to wind the window down)
