Hi all, I went to see an W210 E55 AMG today, and I have a small query.

When it was started with the bonnet open every so often I would hear a tick tick tick noise, but then it would go away.

As far as I could tell it wasn't coming from the engine, but from a unit right next to the engine, on the right hand side, it's a Bosch unit with many small metal pipes coming out from it.

Is this normal or a looming problem?

Thanks! :)

Sounds like the purge valve to me. If so, it's normal. Apparently it's possible to modify the bracket to reduce trasmission to the passenger compartment.

On the right-hand side of a right-hand drive car? Or on your right as you stood at the front of the car looking at the engine?

That'll be the brake hydraulics control unit. Item 95 here.

But, as Bobby Dazzler said, intermittent ticking noises usually come from the regeneration (purge) valve in the fuel system. Item 5 here.

it is not coming from the unit with the pipes. that is the ABS. it is coming from next to it.
the purge regeneration valve. blame green laws for that.

Thank you so much guys, i'm sure it must be the purge regeneration valve then, glad it's normal!!

At the risk of sounding daft.... what's a purge regeneration valve?

Allows fuel vapour from the tank to be vented into the inlet manifold - green laws don't allow them to be vented to the atmosphere.

They used to bevaccum operated, but MBs are now controled by pulses from the ECU (hence the ticking)
