Good evening all,

Have just treated myself to a lovely 2011 e63 AMG 4door. Have only had it a week and it's asked me to check oil level and top-up.
I have searched a few sites online for recommend oil grades and 3 keep popping up. What one is correct? And what's the difference if any?
0w40,
5w40 &
0w30
Thanks
Bill

Hello Bill - the M156 unit uses oil, and you'd be wise to check it regularly, not wait for the message.

I raised the oil spec question with MB after it was suggested that the spec had been revised to 5w-40.

Customer Services emailed that Mobil1 0w-40 was the correct spec.

I guess it could be an M157 5.5l by 2011 - which do you have?

Firstly thanks for your replies, always had MB's but my first AMG so your advise is appreciated.

No my one is the 6.2 (so still the 0w40)?

Yes - do you have a manual with the car - it will be listed in there.

The 6.2 is the M156.

Edit - I found the email:

Thank you for contacting the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center Maastricht N.V.

We write in response to your email communication in which you requested information relating to the above vehicle.

We have consulted with our Technical Team who has advised that the correct oil viscosity specification for your vehicle is 0-W40 from oil sheet number 229.5. No other should be used.

Will have a nose through the manual but I'm sure after reading your last reply that 0w40 is the one. Thank you.

So what is it that uses up the oil, is there other things I should keep a eye on?

It's a performance engine - just stick to the maintenance schedule.

My understanding is that oil Viscosity recommendations are based on ambient temperature as per API's spec, and are not specific to the application e.g. engine type etc.

So I would imagine that MB's Viscosity recommendations are universal to the UK rather than specific to the AMG cars?

Interestingly, different MB dealers used on my car in the past both 5w30 and 5w40 so it seems that the dealers themselves treat MB's recommendation as... recommendation only.

Quite a thread re-gen here lol.

Is the 0w40 still the preferred viscosity oil to use in the M156.

Also what is considered acceptable consumption on the M156?

Cheers

Mine's always had Mobil 1 0W40 and I usually supply it to the garage, just to help ensure the right oil is used. I've been doing around 6k miles per year and it's probably needing around 1 litre of top up during that period.

Costco do Mobil 1 0W-40 5L for £31 inc VAT. Around the cheapest I’ve ever found it and they always have stock :thumb:

Alot of Mobil 1 love here , how is it better?
Better than what? I didn’t make a comparison.

I’m sure there’s other options out there but it’s a decent enough oil, meets MB spec and is recommended by AMG.

It’s also reasonably priced and has good availability (all Esso garages sell it, Halfords, motor factors, Costco etc) if you need top ups.

I’m sure there’s other oils that you prefer - it’s not a problem :)

Whoa, the M156 engine should have either 5W40 or 0W40 - your choice - however MB are quite clear you shouldn't be using 229.51 oil in it, only 229.5.

MB Approved 229.5 List

I believe the reason here is that the more common (in the UK) 229.51 is a low ash formulation designed for diesel engines with DPF's. This formula compromises the lubrication properties slightly so for a performance petrol engine you want 229.5.

Just picked up 10L for the S-Class :thumb:

Except it doesn't , with some manufacturers low ash oil it's actually improved upon even with a lower grade difference !!

Less ZDDP is offset or improved upon with extra friction modifiers in the additive package and or by the inclusion of higher group oil basestocks 4 and 5 .

On the us forums they seem to use the 5w40 viscosity, owners claim it keeps engine oil temperatures that bit cooler?

I have found if I drive the car quite hard I consume that bit more oil.

So does that mean 229.51 spec oil always exceeds 229.5 or that sometimes the oil can meet both specs?

Exactly the same except for tiny improvement to oxidative thickening and obvious lower ash .

MB chooses to separate oil choices , ( it's purely marketing ) whereas others choose more accurately to lable as dual petrol and diesel oil as does a non approved .

VW did a sterling job with their more simple one stop , high quality , universal oil that sees the needs of na , forced , 3 - 10 cylinder petrol or diesel .
