does anyone know some poeple that can repair the ECU on a 1996 C200 Auto as it turns out that this is what the problem is with my car after changing the throttle body and both coilpacks this is the only thing left to do Mercedes want 1300 plus the vat to change the ECU over however my mechanic friend has said that they can be repaired does anyone know a good place to have this done.

Hi
Go into GOOGLE you will have a wide choice.
My ECU went on my 1999 C200 MB gives a two year warranty on the part I had problems with some of the repair places because they said the C200 was sealed in parts and they could not do it.
With something as crucial as the ECU you are best biting the bullet and getting Mercedes to do the job because everything will be tested and set up correctly.
Another thing to think about is the same as any electronic repair they only do the parts that are faulty so you could get another problem in the short term

BBA can replace my ecu for 525 and they send me a new one and i send them my old one and the partnumbers match aswell so im gonna go for that.

or im having it repaired by ecutesting.com depending on how much either one costs if i send it to be repaired tho i will end up without an ecu for a bit

damn lol if only it had happened a couple of days eairler lol

ive checked everything now apart from the ecu and there is just no power what so ever going to the coil could this be the ecu could it be a lose wire as it sprang back to life today for like half hour then died again and i was thinking if it was the ecu then it wouldnt have sprang back to life then died would it.

Hi shilzo
When my ECU packed up I had the same thing (sometimes it would work fine for a day and more) it just kept going wrong so made the car unreliable and I was afraid to use it in fear of breaking down.
I still find it unbelievable that with a quality car like a Mercedes the coil packs can cause over a thousand pounds worth of damage by blowing the ECU you would think they would have put some sort of protection in.
I paid over £1700.00 last year for a new ECU fitted by Mercedes but if one of my coil packs shorts out and causes the same sort of damage it is going to be cheerio car,how are you supposed to know when they could be going faulty.

Difficult to do because what happens is the 40Kv HT spark goes the wrong way so flashes the ECU output transistor. It isn't specified to take that kind of voltage.

If ever anyone has dodgy HT leads or caps deal with them asap otherwise this is hte likely result, and never run the engine with the HT leads disconnected and not shorted to the engine.

Hi Dieselman
Thanks for the reply but not knowing anything about auto electronics I still cant understand with all our technology now days why they could not put some protection in before that sort of voltage reaches the ECU.

Because a spark arrestor would also stop the coil being fired.

The output transistor will be rated to a couple of Kv or so but 40Kv is a hell of a belt, it will jump over an inch of air.

On more modern cars the ECU does protect itself by shutting done the coil drivers before the spike.

thanks for everyone input im gonna have the ECU repaired and should be on the road properly by next month the only thing is i dont know weather to get it repaired or to get it replaced im getting quotes for both.

i love the car too much to sell it because of this

supposidly i can use any bosch or seimens ECU as because my car uses a flick knife key it dont matter as the keys are not coded anyone know if this is true i was told this by merc land

I don't think the central locking remote has any direct influence on the ECU electronics. They don't have to be "matched" However the ignition and fueling maps in the ECU will have be matched to the engine characteristics for optimal running. That's why its probably best to get your ECU repaired unless you can find an "exact" match from a donor car---exact same model year etc

yea ive been told that as long as its the c200 model any ecu will work (bosch or seimens)
