I've just removed the air cleaner lid and flexi ose from my 24V 300D and noticed there is a butterfly valve in the body of the aluminium section that holds the EGR valve.
Lots of sooty carbon came away from the butterfly plate, so i'm assuming this carbon is being sucked into the engine.

Could the system be disabled?
I know i could stop the EGR valve from opening by removing the vacuum hose to it and plugging it, but the throttle mechanism moves the butterfly.
Could this also be disabled allowing the butterfly to be fixed in an open position.

The flap is to make a vacuum at idle for the EGR valve and also it will balance the "mixture" better so reduce idle knocking.

If the EGR valve is redundant just lock it in the WOT position and disconnect it. There might be microswitches on the actuator, if so let them operate as normal otherwise it will throw up a fault.
