First of all can I apologise for anyone who has had to answer this before, I know it has been on the forums but I cannot find what I need to know.

After posting about power loss I was advised about cleaning the EGR. I searched and found directions and thought I would give it a go.

Errr, no! The pictures I had seen bear no resemblance to the engine on my car. Where is the EGR? On the exhaust side under the manifold? On the inlet side?
Near to the turbo?

Come to think of it is its by the turbo how do you get the air filter housing off??

Any pointers gratefully received!!!!

Its on intake side. EGR is just bolted to mixing chamber on bottom of intake manifold. There are 3 star bolts that hold it to mani. To remove it you need to remove EGR cooler (worth cleaning as well) and then loose bottom intake pipe. It took me overall of 4 hours to do it. But that was because my huge hands :(.

Dont loose metal gaskets and clean them well. You can reuse them.

I wrote couple times directions how to remove it. It was added to couple posts about EGR problems in relation to power loss.

Any photos? I would like to do this too.

Yeah, photos or diagrams would be great

If link dont work then try this: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/85784-black-smoke-w210-e320-cdi.html

If you need more info about EGR type EGR in search and use my name in user field. I was active on almost all of them threads about 2-3 months ago. There is a lot info.

.
It is very easy to "turn off" the egr in MB´s program, or decrease it.
So, after that, no dirt in manifold, or any problems with that valve.
Ask some local tuner.

Egr is "on" nearly all the time.
In orig. program it is off only nearly full throttle and after long idling.

Thanks Tuikku

I have read this on other posts, some people say it can be blanked off or even bypassed in the cars engine management, but others say that the computer detects this and it causes problems.

Considering I cant even figure out where it is I don't think I would risk asking someone to bypass it!!!

Is this it?

Inlet manifold the upper centre number 5

Is the EGR 47 and the cooler 77

Hope you can see the numbers

You got that right. 47 & 77 needs very good clean. Make sure EGR and chamber spring move freely (Item 47). They are both on this. Make sure EGR valve on its own move when you push it and most of all clean mixing chamber spring. It should give you resistance but should move smoothly without rubbing feel on it.

Item 77 - EGR cooler - its ust wash thru. There is nothing inside to pay attantion so just good bath in disolving chemicals will do.

PS. If you will have this of. Try checking condition of intake mani (5) as well see if intake motor (11) move easly. If not try to clean a little of both but dont spray anything inside mani while mounted on engine.

Have fun.

Thanks Allias, I would have pm'd you but I havent got enough posts yet.

You wouldnt believe the hassle I had trying to get this diagram!!!

I will try and have a go as soon as I get the chance, got a gallon of degreaser/cleaner and a few old toothbrushes. Lets just hope I don't mess something up, I aint played with a diesel before.

At least the pic may help others who come on with the same problem, looks like it is a common one, and there has always been a problem with people trying to identify the parts.

Have you had a diagnostic check done to check for what has caused the power loss?

Took it to a small independent and there was only one current fault showing, something to do with a signal wire or something. I am taking it back today so will get a proper explanation I hope. I will post the result.

Sounds like description of MAF signal problem. It would be a huge supprise.

UPDATE!

Garage said its the Boost Pressure Control Valve, he has to order it in so probably wont get done until Fri/Mon.

Crossing my fingers while I say this, been quoted £85 for the part and £70 on top for the diagnosis and the fitting, that sounds preeeeetttyyy reasonable to me so hope it sorts it.

Will still get round to cleaning out the EGR when I get a chance though

.
N75 valve is similar both boost and egr.
You can easily check, if false is there, just change their positions.
If the false changes also -> you found it.

Original fault
P1470-008
'charge pressure control Open circuit in wiring Signal wire'

New boost control valve sorted the turbo is now kicking in big time!!
