Electric window problems

CLK320
Good afternoon all,

As you can see, I'm a newbie. I spent all afternoon trawling through the posts on this forum but no-one seems to have the same problem as me, hence the new post. I suppose it's nice to be unique

Anyway, I bought my Y reg CLK320 last year and everything was working fine except for the electronic outside temp display and the clock on the dash (not the most essential of readouts). However, for the past couple of months, I've been having major problems with the front windows. The problem started with the passenger window and now the drivers side has started playing up as well.

Basically, when I push the button to close the window, the window judders, sometimes to the top, only to move down again. I say move, as I can hear the motor going, it doesn't just drop down. The passenger side is now so bad, it can take up to 15 minutes to finally get it closed. When it was just the passenger window, I wasn't that bothered but now the driver's side has started going the same way, I'm getting a tad frustrated.

When I open and close the doors (with the windows in a fully closed position), the windows drop down to clear the rubber seal and close fully again.

Any ideas what can be wrong? Please keep in mind my knowledge of car maintenance is limited to filling it with whatever fluids it needs and checking the fuses! However, I am keen on learning more.

Thanks in advance,

LisaC

Hi Lisa & welcome

Have you checked the rails and channels are clean?
These can gum up over time and can affect the window operation.
Failing this the motors may need changing.
I would look at the channels first

Hiya StevenN,

Thanks for answering. Nope, I've cleaned the rubbers etc but that didn't help. I'm assuming cleaning the channels etc will mean me having to take the panel off the door?

Aren't CLK windows frameless? You'd probably need to get the door cards off to check.

Oh lord, see what I mean about being completely clueless! Yes, they are. I assumed it meant some part of the internal workings

Ok, so what's a door card? I've read about them on here. Is that the inside bit on the door that covers up all the gubbins, BTB 500?

Yes the door card is the internal trim panel on the door. Usually they're held on with plastic 'popper' type clips, but no idea about the CLK specifically - sorry!

My SL has similar windows (frameless, that drop slightly when you open the doors), and they're also a bit slow to go up. But nothing worse than that ... yours do sound like they are sticking in the guides.

Thank you so much for your clear answer, BTB500! I really appreciate it. Will have a go at cleaning the guides after reading my owners manual.

I would just try a re-sync of the windows first .

Presume you have the two position switches ? gentle pressure to the first click , then more pressure to the second ?

Key into ignition , turn to position 2
Put the windows right down
Push each switch in turn to the first pressure point (gently) and hold until it reaches the top , hold for a further second or so.
This will reset the windows and they learn their positions.

It sounds like perhaps a tooth or two has stripped off the motors , but without getting someone to have a look , it will be hard to call.

Good luck

The drivers side window would not close easily on my CLK, it would stick and return down or tilt over. The door check strap which stops the door opening too far had broken free from the door and the mechanism was in the way of the glass returning up. It was still stopping the door opening too far but fouling the glass with the door shut. Are you windows any better with the door wide open?

LisaC I had the same problem with my CLK, firstly as others have mentioned it's worth resetting the memory on the windows. Secondly I used some silicone spray down the channels to aid smooth running of the window in it's runners, its dead easy. Buy a silicone spray from any motor shop, lower the window and squirt the spay only down the channels where the edge of the glass runs. I used the straw off a WD40 can to aim the spray rather than it going all over the glass, but you will get a little on the glass but easily cleaned off.

Hi Rob

PTFE spray is better than silicone.
Everbuild do one that is a reasonable price.
I have tried both.

^^^+1 It sounds like it needs some lubrication, the dash readouts can also be fixed with a rubber band and a matchstick but you will need to up your maintenance skills to do it as it is a bit fiddly. There is a post on another similar website that explains how to do it which can be found by googling it. Good luck

Lisa, where in the country are you, as there might be a fellow member who could help you out if you are having difficulty finding a solution to your problem. :thumb:
