electric windows failed

Hi, Just bought a W124 230 TE estate (my first merc) and both front electric windows aren't working (in the up position). I can hear the motors trying but nothing is biting to pull the window down. Am I likely to need new regulators or is there a chance of me fixing what I've got? Is it tricky to get the door interior off to find out?

any help gratefully received.

I had my drivers side one fail, replaced the regulator as the last 2 teeth had worn off.

Is it that the window won't go down/up or both? Any nasty grinding noises when they are operated?

Door panel is easy to get off, just a couple of bolts - remove the small cover from the inside where the mirror attaches to the door first.

Definitely sounds like the regulators to me - had the same thing happen to my exW124 estate. Main dealer charged around £300 which made me sit down quietly for quite a while. If you have a Haynes manual I'm pretty sure it will guide you through a DIY process which would be much cheaper.

windows

Nice one thanks. I'll probably give it a go this weekend. Passenger window won't go down but motor is still working. Driver's side was working again yesterday (?) but definitely grinds so I assume the teeth are on their way out on that one. Definitely trying to avoid spending £300. How much were the new regulators?

thanks again

I know some people have had success welding new teeth on the regulator - depositing weld and filing by hand. If you have the kit or a friendly chappie - got to be worth a go, it is a fairly agricultural bit of kit so tolerant.

I paid £80 for a genuine Mercedes regulator and all day to fit it. The door panel is quite easy as I said, what's a fiddle is getting the regulator from out of the door.

The hole that's provided in the inner panel is small, it's a fiddle so be prepared for bashed knuckles and choice language.

I found that I could grab the glass and push up or down so the motor engaged in the teeth that were left. OK in an emergency.
