Electronic Mystery

Peeps. I've been having weird goings on recently in my 2007 S211 E320 V6 Cdi.

The electrics are playing up. Initially the dash cam I have fitted started intermittently turning on and off. It's hard wired into the rear cigarette lighter socket. Then the fan for both the heater and air con fan stops and starts when it pleases. It works more than it doesn't. Over the last few days the right parking sensor kicks in and the dash sensor lights come on when I'm driving with no obstructions. Any idea's. Thanks in advance.

How old is the battery?

There should be a manufacturing date on the battery.

Have you checked the voltage under load and off load and the same when charging?

I've had the motor about 4 years. The battery was tested when I had the alternator changed about 6 months ago. I'll get the voltages checked as you've mentioned. Thanks.

The car is showing 14.2 volts whilst driving.

When the engine is running, the alternator is charging the battery, and what you are actually measuring is the voltage that the alternator is outputting (limited by the voltage regulator). This in itself doesn't tell you much about the condition of the battery.

The battery needs to be tested under load using a tester device that typically only auto electricians will have.

Cheers mate. Another quicky. The interior lights don't come on at night when I take the key out as they have previously.

Did you check the position of the switch in the overhead switch panel?

The other alternative to a battery fault is an earth wiring fault.
This is common when many systems on a vehicle work intermittently.
