I only drive my car in the weekends and for the past 2-3 weeks have been only doing short drives down to the shops or locally. ( 10-15mins drives in Central London)

I went to the supermarket yesterday and when I went to start the car to go home the engine would start then just cut out. This happened 3-4 times. I finally took the key out of the ignition waited about 10 seconds then put it back in and it started perfectly.

Anyone have any ideas for this happening?

I was thinking it could be the battery but I got this new one about 15 months ago.

Thanks BlackC55......I have searched the forum and found out all I needed to know.
Seems like a very common problem

mate what was the cause of it as im havin a same problem?

There is not a cause as such, these thing just fail when they go open circuit, mostly due to temperature changes. The wire coil inside is made of very fine wire and the wire breaks when the casing gets hot and expands

Thanks Malcom,

So I guess we can expect the same problem again until it gets fixed?
Is this something a local garage (non mercedes indie) would be able to fix if we buy and supply the part?.........or is it best take it to a merc garage?

Thanks Malcom and Desilva.

I have tried looking on the Bosch website but cant find a part number or description. I think they call it a phase sensor in the Bosch website?? Heres the link. Is this the right part?

http://www.boschautoparts.co.uk/pcRetS1_3.asp?c=2&d=1

I also rang Eurocarparts and they gave me two prices. One for a "camshaft sensor" and one for a "crankshaft sensor" and they said its two different types of sensors.?? I am confused now? I assume I need the Crankshaft Sensor?

Does anyone know where I can find the Bosch part number so I know exactly which part I am getting.

Thanks

OK....for the E55 amg the MB sensor number is 003 153 27 28. The Bosch equivalent is Bosch no 0261 270 170.

It is know as the RPM sensor on the Bosch page I gave you earlier.

Thanks again for your help desilva.

Just out of curiosity whats the difference between the two different model Bosch numbers?

The shop I rung today only stocked the 0261-210-170 model.

They have a MB number one side and a Bosch the other

I believe that yours is Bosch 0 261 210 171 / MB A 003 153 27 28

the plug socket is oval

Thanks to Desilva, BlackC55 and Television for all your help and advice.
Managed to order a bosch branded part from Eurocarparts for £35.69 plus VAT.

Well it looks to be down to the year of vehicle manufacture.....apart from that, I'm afraid I don't know

Sorry....I meant engine number. Make sure your engine number corresponds to the correct sensor as per the attachment.
