2.7 cdi , the engine has very erratic running when warm or cold , it also runs at around 60c so that may be the problem , no codes showing , any help appreciated.

Welcome.

The low temperature is certainly a failed thermostat, a common fault on these engines.

Sorry that filled automatically , now done.
I realise the thermostat is needing changed that will be done , is there anything else like checking the intake flaps , can they be checked as Ive heard if one of them is broken this doesn't help.
Ill get any codes tomorrow if there are any.

Erratic run is often due to fuel pressure problems. Faulty EGR may cause it too, often seen smoking too. Intake flap actuation can be checked at some level by watching the actuation bar moving under the intake manifold (end of the bar is barely visible under front most duct).

Many thanks , will give thois a good look over today and next day.Would fuel pressure be affected by fuel filter blockage maybe?

Yes, but it tend to be worse when throttling because more fuel needed then (--> engine cuts out if pressure drops) More often hunting revs problem is injector related OR just air leak in system (o-rings or brittle plastic low pressure pipes). Then pressure control valve fails rarely too (valve has also o-rings).

Reading the possible fault codes and watching live parameters when problem is on would help...

DIY injector leak off test is easy, you'll need only short plastic pipe and clamp blocking loosen fuel line

I have now had a chance to evaluate whats happening with my diagnostic. The Maf sensor was showing a pending fault with a low value it said.
The temperature of the engine read on my device as 120 c, but the dash is only reading 55 centigrade.
So this will not help any idling or above.
I cleaned the MAF sensor and this improved the overall running , so at least I saw some change.
So a new temperature thermostat will get fitted and also a MAF, ALONGSIDE A VERY DIRTY AIRCLEANER Ouch!

I doubt that the engine has been running at 120c, if it was then I would expect head gasket problems as a result due to severe overheating, not to mention boiling coolant being expelled from the header tank, and I think you would be aware of a very hot engine!. Also, I wouldnt expect a faulty maf to cause erratic running.

Agree with above, 120 Deg C means gasket danger.

Do you get an oil temp reading too, to corroborate the coolant temp? Hoping for around 100-105 C for the Oil. 120 Deg C coolant is a little toasty (might be F as this is roughly 49 Deg C), 55 Deg C seems far too low too.

Will note oil temp reading but to be honest diagnostic tool must be reading farenheight as it coverts to what the car is reading lol.The Maf is still coming up as a fault and so its on order as between water ,air and fuelling it would be excusable that the engine is running as it is. I hope I'M NEARLY THERE.

OK still waiting for MAF sensor changed the air filter and fitted the thermostat. Car runs 85c to 88/90 , a much better range but still rough at idle and a little like it overfuels , still goes exceptionally quick.
MAF next

More parts on order , apparently the seals on the fuel pressure regulator can cause erratic running and its quite common so they are now on order, the smoke has disappeared with the new maf fitted.
