Car takes 5.5 litres of engine oil

Used the pela pump which can extract 6 litres the bloody previous independent garage that serviced the vehicle has overfilled the engine!

It got to a point where the pela pump was full had to remove some out of the pump and extract again!

I've removed a total of 9.5 litres of oil!

Ive driven the vehicle over 500 miles short and long journeys on the motorway

Would the overfill caused any long term damage?

What year is the car?

Ouch yeah I just checked and it’s showing up at 5.5L capacity...

Wow.... hopefully no long term damage. I thought you’d get an error message if overfilled. I was going to say check you didn’t drain out the ATF with the pump by accident, but obviously the car won’t be driving now then

Haha, Definitely engine oil dipstick i removed to extract the oil

No warning message whatsoever, although i did notice at times exhaust fumes which i thought were excessive, but thought it was normal

Give the garage a call! Pretty sure they are responsible for any damage they caused, although it might be difficult to prove?

Only purchased the vehicle privately recently, i'm guessing i won't get far with them, they'll wash their hands of any responsibility

So, your car has a dipstick? Did you check it before the oil change?

Yep has a dipstick, did check previously couldn't really tell

My W210 would tell me if the oil was too high or too low, did you get any warnings? Not disputing what you said but can you physically put almost double the amount of oil in the engine? What made you change the oil after 500 miles?

EDIT: I see you recently bought the car and hence changed the oil.

If you checked the dipstick, 9.5L vs 5.5L is very noticeable!

No warning lights whatsover, at the time when i viewed the car it was definitely above max but didn't really think it was that much over!

Definitely 9.5 litres were extracted 5.5 in the pela pump and the rest 4 litres in 2 litre bottles

My c250 has a dipstick i think the ones without the dipstick are digital readouts on the dash

My car has both.

Not sure how you couldn't tell though on the dipstick.

Because the dipstick was floating a foot above the engine bay?

That's a massive overfill and the oil control rings will have taken a hiding. How to prove it though?

Carried out tec4 engine flush and replaced with mercedes 229.5 oil, 5.5 litres exact:)

Here's hoping no lasting damage has occurred

Monitor your oil consumption. And find some way of documenting the removal of 9.5l - photographs with a date showing - and keep.
If the consumption is excessively high over the next few hundred miles - return to vendor.

You should have noticed the high oil level when you checked the dipstick for signs of water during pre-sale evaluation....

I would say the car has probably done approx 1000 or so miles since it was overfilled by the independent garage last year jan 2018 to today when I replaced the oil and oil filter

Yep i've taken a picture of all the oil extracted.

I purchased the car privately, would i have any grounds to take it up with the independent garage?

Im traveling up north on the weekend circa 125 miles will have a check when i arrive once the oil has settled

Signs of water?
