What should the temperature gauge on a Mercedes E320 Cdi read at normal.
On my 2001 Mercedes E320 Cdi the gauge never rises above 60

Sounds like you need a new thermostat

Is 90c the standard value across most models? I was about to create a new thread with the same question for a 2011 W204 estate.

80 to 90 deg C standard range for these vehicles.

Should improve your heater output and mpg once a new thermostat is fitted.
