Hi, I know that there have been a few posts with reference to error code readers, but I am just wondering if there is some up-to-date suggestions. I get "Visit workshop" messages every now and again when starting the car but as far as I know there isn't a following message to say actually what the fault might be, i.e. battery fault or tyre pressure. I have checked the oil level with the steering wheel buttons as I thought that this could be the reason for the message but I am not sure if this would happen with low oil anyway.
I am not really sure whether I can justify paying £5-600 for a Chinese star reader kit but they do seem to be the only ones that actually give an error explanation rather than just a code which requires decyphering. On the other hand the code readers are available for around £50-60 but then where can one find a list of codes, and even then is that decyphered explanation of any use to anyone except to a trained mechanic ?
Opinions / suggestions are appreciated.

You can either opt for a generic OBDII code reader (they come as handheld standalone, serial/USB to laptop, or Bluetooth to work with iPhone/Android), or a device that can also read some of the MB-specific codes.

The generic OBDII code reader will read only engine and transmission codes, while an MB-specific reader (e.g. Autel MaxiDiag) will also read some of the other MB codes such as SRS/Airbag system and ESP/ABS/BAS.

But in order to be able to communicate with all of the car's ECUs and read all of the MB codes you will need to go and see someone with an original MB STAR diagnostic device.

Take it to an Indy Mercedes specialist it won't be much more than buying a code reader.

Hi, thanks for the replies, I think that the first option may well be to go to a garage using Star at least the first time, just to see what the error code may be referring to. The car is always serviced by a local guy, who is pretty good, and any big jobs get done in main dealer. I can't see anything wrong and I can't feel any problems in the car. The "Visit workshop" message is anot always showing up - just every now and again, there is no regular times when it comes up.
I will have a think about it, I guess.
