Hi all ..

Last few weeks i have had the warning flash up a couple of times ' BAS , ESP , ASR INOPERATIVE VISIT WORKSHOP ' on the CLK430.

Stopping the car and turning the ignition off and then restarting has reset the faults and currently there are no faults showing.

Any ideas ? Thinking that the first port of call would be changing the brake light switch ..

Why would it happen in the cold weather ? the first time it happened it was very snowy and icy , but the last time it happened i was on the M25 doing 70ish and it was a clear , fine day ( if cold ) ....

Thanks in advance

H

Change the Stop light switch first, if the ESP light comes on as soon as the car starts moving then it could be a wheel speed sensor.
Really need to plug a diagnostic reader in to obtain a fault code :thumb:

Howard, I wonder if Ice and a build up of snow round the sensors would create the problem.

I thought that Ian , but i thought that 50 miles on the motorway would have melted it off ..... it was a cold day though ( Boxing Day ) ...

It hasn't done it since the thaw ....

I'll keep my eyes on it while it is mild and see if it happens again. :)

Here's something that happened to me on a previous (non-MB) car...

Same problem, ABS/ESP light coming up intermittently, dealer found it to be faulty brake light bulbs. They were slightly blackened, though working, and the dealer figured their resistance has changed and replaced them with two fresh bulbs.

Not sure if it is applicable to MB cars though.

Hi

I was thinking low battery voltage until you said it happened on the motorway.
What state is the battery in??

Virtually new.

I'd bet you almost certainly that it's the brake light switch too. They're only about £12, should be in stock at MB and they're open today.

Just a couple of minutes to fit, I'll pop past and help you if you need a hand :)

Worth doing sooner rather than later in this weather, they can also lock the shifter into park if you're unlucky.

At work at the moment

Will pop to Yates and order one after work , they should have it tomorrow.

If the battery is good go for the brake light switch then. It was just interesting it started in the coldest of weather but then it has to start acting up at sometime I suppose.

I've seen a couple go over the last month or two, I think sometimes they stick in the cold weather. In fact, the last one of mine that went some while back was in the cold weather too.

IMHO, for the sake of about £12 I would just change it to rule it out, they seem to be almost a consumable :)

Anything that affects tyre diameter, inflation pressure, change of tyre(s) but not all 4, etc...

Howard

Did the brake light switch sort it??

Hi

Never did it in the end , it didn't happen again , so i guess it was just snow / ice in the sensors.

Not done it since.

Reminded me now though , that the cold weather is coming again , i must get one ordered.

Exactly the same thing happened on my old clk 320 cab Howard, driving home from Scotland(Montrose) xmass 2009,had been snowing up there & the temp was well below freezing, fault never showed up again so i suspect ice on the sensors(as you do )was the culprit.

No. Still a rocketship. ;)
