I hate to be so practical , but if one has difficulties with the sun coming into the car and would like to cut back on this , then it would be an idea to loook into getting some sun protection glass fitted. This is a film that will cut back on the UV and cut back on the heat.

Just an idea :)
It's a great idea.

No one individual has these problems......... It is inbuilt. The glass slopes at quite an angle.

Putting sun protected glass is a very sensible suggestion but how often is this done? It is not an issue with us, we take protection, just like anyone that bathes in the sun. There is no difference to this apart from the fact that in a modern estate car, the objectslay in the sun but with a glass cover over them.

Personally I like the current E class shape a lot. Remember that Volvo have traditionally been the lead in the estate car market (not any more though) so I reckon the C class rear was shaped to match the V40, and the E class made practical like the V70. Current V70 is smaller than the E class and smaller than the Mondeo and Vectra too.

If I were to buy a C I'd like the estate, but I like to have a secure boot and for me estates / hatches are a parking risk. We have the other car for big loads...

My current s-class has infrared and UV protective glass and I must say the difference with the previous generation is quite noticeable.

Also, I have an electric rear window roller blind which is quite effective against the sun - is there such an option for the estates? Would it actually help?

As soon as you drop the need to have something that looks sporty, you can have far more inside space for a far smaller vehicle.

Here's an example of an estate that's better looking than the saloon.

I wholeheartedly agree :) thats why mine , which looks identicle to that one including the xenon headlamps and Panoramic sunroof arrives at the end of the month from the factory :)

I like my old 80's estate loads of room in the back when the seats are folded down, and when their not it will happily carry seven adults on or off road.As for its looks they've been building it the same shape for 28 years and there's only been minor changes in it's exterior design, personally I love its looks and no I don't like the looks of the new GL.

I was more thinking of Window tinting film rather than the Metallic UV glass.

QUick and easy and about £300 later your car will be a lot cooler inside.

Thanks for that, how would this stuff react to the heated rear window element? I am NOT disagreeing with your excellent and very helpful point.

Mercedes are not the only people to have got it wrong. I remember the first time I saw a Ford Sierra estate and thinking it was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen.
Here are 4 others from the past, 3 perfect examples of how not to do it, and one perfect example of doing it right. You choose
An Aston Martin Lagonda, A Bentley Arnage, A Porche 944 and a Ferrari 330 GT

No problem as far as i know , there is an anti smash film thats not suitable for the rear view window. But the regular window tint films should be fine :)

Definitely no problem, the vaneo (and my octavia estate before it) have tints all round the rear.

Hi John, there are problems around with some of the add on tint films with quite a few from MB,,it depends on the locking of the individual car.

Some firms now advertise that their products are OK

On the original question / poll the 124 will stay in my heart forever as one of the nicest estate cars that I have owned, and I have had over 60

Can you recommend anywhere around Glasgow for this? I should have this done really before our trip to Italy.
Thanks Jason.

the back of my e class saloon window slopes a lot as well,I have had a tint put on rear sides and back ..... son no2 18 months old and very blonde is protected from the sun, as the car seat means he has to stay in one position while we travel he cannot duck out of the way .. as it shone right on his bonce ... the tint makes it more comfortable for him and his sister sat in the rear of the car ... a lot of the heat is taken as well..and protection from uv rays ??? as claimed by the makers... you can sit without it starting to burn ...my tint lets in 20% but because I have a light interior its not dark inside ...the heater works fine ..... and vision is just the same ....even my auto dimming rear veiw still works, although with the tint fitted it stops the glare of those dammed xzenon lamps

I have an E240 W210 estate which I think is OK but not as practical as the W124 that I had previously. I have 2 Golden Retriever dogs - the reason I bought my W124 in the first place, with the largest load area available.

I am thinking about changing to a W211 but the load area available space does seem to be reduced somewhat by the slope of the rear window, but not to the extent that it will cause a problem for the dogs. It's the washing machines, fridge freezers. TV's etc. that I would have to be careful with - I've not yet put a window out!

Not bad....
