SLK320 (R170)
Hi,
Any suggestions out there on how I can get my R170 SLK 320 to sound a little more meaty? I'm not after the boy racer effect, neither do I want something that will either annoy the neighbours or become tiring on journeys, but just a little louder than the rather subdued standard item. One more thing, I want it to look pretty much standard as well. Any advice gratefully received.

V8's respond well to having the secondary cats and resonator removed and replaced with a x-pipe. Not too loud but enough under full acceleration to make you smile.

I don't know however if this works for a V6. Opening up the cats, gutting the innards and re-welding is another exhaust mod some have done.

There are a couple of well known and respected exhaust fabricators who could help you. Where are you based?

I was hoping to retain the cats (keeping it simple and to pass the MOT) and install something from the point where the exhaust pipes merge to one single pipe just after the catalytic converters. I'm in south west. Wales and called in to a local Longlife stainless steel fitter, but was put off by the two young lads there who clearly thought I needed a huge tailpipe and to get it to effectively sound like a track car.

Torqueflow in Birmingham, Tony Banks in Leeds.....amongst many

Anyone used these guys? I'd like to hear what it's going to sound like before committing.

I used Torqueflow and the job they did was perfect. You describe the sound you are looking for and they do the job.

I've used Torqueflow as well though unlike Roger above I always forget to take photos. :)

All they did on mine was a rear resonator delete and balance pipe put in as I was the same as you, in that I wanted a bit more growl but not too much. Sound job <pun not intended>
