Mercedes does loads of nice shiny exhaust tips/pipes, some steel, some chrome, some expensive AMG but the problem for us W202 guys has always been our downturned exhaust pipes can't really take any trims. The answer up to now has been to replace the whole backbox with an AMG one or an aftermarket one but I dont want anymore noise just more bling!

I have therefore commissioned a Stainless steel fabricator to make from scratch two polished stainless steel pipes/trims to fit onto the existing downturned pipes and then protrude by just a little bit out under the bumper.

A few questions:

Has anyone else already done this?

How much should a custom job cost?

How far do standard exhaust trims stick out? Photos of trims, pipes and measurement of the overhang on your cars welcome!

I was quoted for a custom-made stainless replacement backbox, as loud/quiet as required with twin-oval chrome tailpipes. That was only £250.

I would hope the add-ons would be less than that :)

So do I! What do you think is reasonable for a custom job? What about overhang?

Can I add a 4th question mate?

4) If GregE240 likes them, could your man do a second set!? :D

Go on G, you know you want to be the guinea pig!!

(PS - thought I did see some trims for a 202/210 once upon a time, on a Japanese website?)

I would check with your insurance company.

Seriously, they see it as making your car more desirable and hence more of a risk.

Thats the reason I removed my shiny tailpipes, the insurance co wanted £150 extra premium plus raised my excess to £500. And seeing as I bought it to their attention I had no choice but to pay or remove them, so I removed them. Interesting that they have not charged me extra for the 17" AMG's though??

As for costs, I guess it depends on how they fix them, weld on ones should be cheaper than clamp-ons. I would have thought around £60-£80 for some quality ones. There were some on ebay that looked like they would fit a 202 for around £80 a few months back.

Another reason I removed mine was because of the unwanted attention they attracted, had lots of chavs and Kev's driving too close and wanting a race.

So did I at about £180 ish :( . I'll keep you posted. I've e mailed them photos, and measurements. I hope to get the twin pipe look for about £50 all in. BTW my exit pipes are 41mm is that common to other cars (especially E240!)

I'll bear that in mind. My arguement will be that there is no performance gain. I'll keep you posted!

My new policy says any moficication to the standard performance and standard look of the vehicle.

So was mine, and boy did I argue!! They were not interested, shiny bits make the car more desirable. You must tell your insurance company.

..........of course tips will be a removeable trim rather than a permanent fixture.....

BUMP . Any photos or measurements of overhang?

Ok without the benefit of any measurements I have asked for my drawing to be made. it will be entirely fabriated in polished stainless steel. The Welds will be polished as well. It will join onto the existing downturned pipes which slope at about 50 degrees and then in will come out about 80mm from that seam and end with a slash end. Cant wait to see it!

Will be very interested to see the results of this .... this mod cost me an AMG backbox, so if it can be done for £50 .........

Pictures please .... might even do the same for the downturned single pipe on my BMW if yours looks good !

Mine too.

£130 fitted :D

Can't wait to see the results Greg and you won't have a booming "Barry" exhaust note like me.

Yeah, and yours even sounds like the real thing !

Well, I'm told it will have a screw fitting so that it will be easy for me to attach and will take a week to make and then we will see hit or miss!

can't wait to see this

nice and the cheapest I've seen! I'll see how my one comes out though.

They look interesting - but they are straight, so not sure how they would work on the downturned pipes ... needs to curve back up before becoming straight ! Can't tell from those pics if they would work on a 202 ... you might need to cut the downturned ends off the existing pipes first ! (easy enough, I guess!)
