F1 2019

Tbh, I don’t care if I know the result in advance, if I get chance to watch it I will. If not, so what. But that applies to most programmes we record.

Today, for instance, Mrs B was out, so I watched the C4 highlights I’d recorded while doing the ironing. Who said blokes can’t multitask!?
I do much the same. - Iron work shirts for next week, and watch the F1 at the same time (if it's finished recording).
Better to watch qualifying because I don't care if I miss chunks of that.

I don't really begrudge Sky taking full advantage of the deal they made, but I'm not paying for a subscription (plus again for the channel) just to watch it live. - I'm happy enough with what C4 has to offer.

I have, but then I had no choice :D

I'm that little bit younger, so escaped. However :

With what we're seeing on the streets these days, there's a good argument that conscription should be re-instated!

That’ll teach me to assume!!
(fwiw, I was just a few years too young for National Service, but joined for 9 years as a regular - learned how to do a lot of things, some good, some definitely not good )

Back on topic, Young Schumacher - is he where he is (testing for Ferrari) because of his name, or because he’s very good?

Couldn't agree more - every youngster should have a couple of years in the services. I was lucky/unlucky in that I went to boarding school and then the army but I was shocked to see how some of the lads struggled without their mummies and that was in the 70s. We had the unfortunate war on the borders in SA in those days and even had go at the communists in Angola and got our asses kicked.

I'd love to see how generation snowflake would cope.

Mick Schumacher - cannot see a team spending that much money on a person without talent. From what I've read/seen about him, he has plenty talent.

The Ferrari brand was strengthened by the success that came during the years Michael was driving for them (that would not though have occurred without the huge contributions from Ross Brawn, Jean Todt et al).

Mick Schumacher has so far shown that he can pedal, if that translates/transfers into strong performance in a Ferrari F1 car, then it would be a very good fit from a brand perspective. If SV doesn't deliver a world championship for the Red team this year he will be toast. Especially if LeClerc continues to deliver.

My gut feel is that SV is toast already and that the prancing horse are lining up Schumacher Jnr to take his seat.

For most of his time at Red Bull, SV never had to go wheel to wheel with anyone and on the odd occasion when he did it was 50/50 at best. He buckled psychologically last year when pressured by Hamilton, and LeClerc has arrived in the team with bucket fulls of talent, everything to gain, and nothing to lose. Add in cars that are more evenly matched and capable of closer racing which is outside his comfort zone and SV's days are numbered, imo.

SV buckled under pressure from Jenson Button in Canada and was at best clumsy when under pressure from Mark Webber and Danny Riciardo. So yes I agree, it's definitely squeaky-bum time for him this year.

Vettel has a contract until the end of next year and has already hinted that if he doesn't like the new regs he may leave (more show and less racing). He may not have a choice, as said above if he doesn't deliver and/or Charles out scores him he will get the boot. That's the price you pay at Ferrari and in most top teams.

Would you put Mick Schumacher straight into a Ferrari? I would have thought he may get placed in the Alfa Romeo team for a year first, ala Leclerc's route. Would line up well with Vettel's contract.

Even that is accelerated from what is probably an expected 2 year stint in GP2 (unless he wins this year and makes himself ineligible for next).

I have been impressed by F1 cars a number of times over the years and I was again this morning during quali for China.

The first time was back in 1979 when we had one of the first workshop units within the Silverstone complex. One of the perks was that at lunchtime you could lean over the barriers and check out who was running. That day it was Allan Jones testing the W07 Williams for the first time. I watched in disbelief as this car rounded Stowe and Club at a speed which seemed completely impossible, it was like trying to keep yours eyes on a model slot car.

A few years later I was on the outside of Paddock Hill at Brands as Nico’s dad (Keke) qualified the W08 Williams for the British GP. The car appeared on a collision course with the marshalls post on the outside on the entry to the turn, when it then just jinxed to the right and followed the hill down to the bottom. The car seemed to be going far too quickly to either stay on the road as it crested the brow or to take the turn. The ground effect cars were just ridiculously quick.

In 1985 I was at the start of the straight at Zandvort when Nelson Piquet was qualifying the Brabham BMW turbo ‘grenade’.

The car came in to view in the turn on the straight writhing and protesting as it’s driver wrestled it straight and then lit the fuse. There was what I can only describe as an explosion, and a huge puff of black smoke. A second later as the smoke cleared the car was not there, already out of sight at the end of the straight……

This morning I was impressed by Lewis on his first run in Q3 through the final turn on the pit straight from the driver’s eye view on TV. He was only a tenth quicker in that final section, but the speed he took that final turn was the equivalent of taking a left 90 deg street junction at 100pmh…..and he made the turn unlike Albon had done earlier in the day. How did he know it would stick? How did he know there was that much left in the tyres?

If you have the Sky coverage it’s very much worth a look.

Don’t ever think you could get anywhere near what these guys do!

Martin Brundle was commenting from Turn 7 yesterday. He said the cars were going around there at 150+mph and that no other racing car would have a chance of getting round at that speed.

Good result for LH.

WTF were Ferrari thinking of ....

LH definitely pulled his finger out and VB didn't quite have it today.
Ferrari are always going to favour SV and the sooner Charles recognises that and learns to suck it up, the happier(?) he will be. Again having the faster car didn't translate into lap-times for Ferrari, they couldn't even hang on to fastest lap.

Q. Why on Earth do Toro Rosso persist with Kvyat? Must be funding because it's clearly not talent. Once again his brain cell got overloaded in traffic and whoops!

LeClerc shouldn't be surprised, he replaced Kimi who was a number 2 to Seb.

Just to add Kvyat's incident was a racing incident imo. Sainz hit him and he then hit Norris. He does have a bad history and incidents like this won't help him

On my TV, Kvyat overdone it on the corner with a bit of oversteer and put him in the path of Sainz, which in turn resulted in him wiping out Norris.

From what I saw all the blame was on DK.

I agree he overdid it a bit and initial thoughts were that it was all his fault. But when I saw all 3 onboard views, he was tagged first which resulted in him hitting the second McLaren. Maybe he shouldn't have been there in the first place

I didn't find it a particularly interesting race to be honest.
