Hi Guys,

I currently have a W211 E-Class and looking to upgrade. Went to view a W211 Facelift model. Car appeared clean but when I started it from cold, there was a rattling from the engine for about 2-3 seconds and a noticeable tapping from the engine. The car has been idle and not started for approx. 4 weeks.

My question is, while I'm aware of what would cause this noise on the above vehicle in regular use (chain/tensioner/cams etc.), is it possible that with this car, having been idle for a number of weeks would cause oil to bleed off the chain/tensioner etc?

When I restarted the car 2/3 times after this, albeit in the space of 10 minutes the only noise was a tapping from the engine!

Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated.

As above, if it doesn't sound right then move on.

To get into it we'd need the vin number and then days of debate and speculation finishing with "it could be ok but then again it might not".

If your genuinely interested in the car see if you can take it to a MB specialist to look it over if the seller would oblige.

You wouldnt expect to park up and go on holiday and come back to your engine rattling. So id say it has an issue. Unless it was a freezing cold day and what you heard was the injectors ??

The best advice is to walk away, there are plenty of others to choose from.

It would help with appropriate engine related advice if you stated which engine and if petrol or diesel.

Which engine? Petrol? Diesel? Vehicle age?

Diesels can be a bit rattley on start-up from cold.

It's not a facelift and it has a few miles, but I'd be all over this forum members E320 CDi if I was in the market to buy one. The price is an absolute steal IMO.

2003 - Mercedes E320 CDI
Agreed, it looks fantastic for the price although the OP is in Ireland so this may put them off.
