I Replaced the front wheel bearings yesterday.Whilst wheels were off i removed the plastic arch covers and sprayed some wax protection to the inner wing&wing. On the N/S, i sprayed a large multi wiring plug, near to the screenwash bottle (sorry no photo yet),with WD 40. When driving the car now,i have the following faults-: EL Power control,EPC,ABS.ESP,BAS.The dash display shows 6 faults but those 5 are only showing.I have tried the steering lock to lock 3 times and disconnected the battery overnight, witch has made no difference.Has spraying this multi plug with WD 40 caused the faults? The car was fault free before i carried out this work.

Possibly but not necessrily. Part the plug and clean with Isopropyl alchohol or switch cleaner, then try it.

Hi Dieselman.I have just got back from my local motor acessory shop&they dont sell switch cleaner.Would Brake cleaner do? If not my only other option today is to try halfords

While you were doing the bearing work, did you check the ABS tooth-ring and how the ABS sensor was sitting?

Im afraid not.I was very carefull in removing&refitting the caliper, disc&wheel hub.Im going to take both front wheels off after work tomorrow to inspect all componants and disconnect and spray multi plug.I"ll let you all no tomorrow

Cleaned abs multi plugs with switch cleaner.Removed abs pick up(it seemed to be sitting ok.It was dirty so i cleaned them on both sides.I still have 4 faults-ABS,BAS,ESP,&EPC.Has anyone else got any ideas as what to do next?

You need to get the fault codes read really otherwise its just guesswork.

I Think you must go to make reset with star diagnosting tool

If the set up is the same as mine, (C240 2001 Model), there is no "tooth Ring". The agitator for the sensor is incorpoated inside the inner wheel bearing hub seal. Even 3 Mercedes Dealerships that I approached for advice, did not know this.

If you tapped in the replacement hub seal, you will have damaged the agitator inside the seal. The seal needs to be press fitted, with NO metal contact to the seal.

If this is the case, I can supply more info if required.

I didnt see a toothed ring, mine must be the same setup as yours.Yes i did tap the seal in with a copper head hammer with a thin block of wood over the seal.I have one spare seal as one of the bearing kits came with two seals.I will change seals on both sides before i pay for the star diagnostics.Do you or anyone know if you can buy the wheel bearing seal without buying the whole kit?

C240YAZ, Please supply info for fitting seal.I have a large bench vice to press it in,but i suppose i would have to cover the metal jaws with wood.I hope replacing the seals cures the faults.I have lost count of all the wheel bearings i have replaced and i have always tapped the seal in gently with no problems, but not on this model of merc it would seem!

There is no need for star diagnostics, (if this is the problem). I done the same as you, tapping in the seals with wood and a mallet and went through a week of hell trying to find out what I done wrong, (cruise control was also lost) until television sent me the schematics of the set up.

MB Glasgow, Preston and Blackpool disagreed with me, but we proved them wrong.

If you do not have access to a press or proper pulling tool, here is how to fit the new seals, and it does work.

1. Buy a length of threaded screw rod, nuts and appropriate repair washers from B&Q.

2. Cut to size of what you will need. (longer than the hub dia)

3. You will need to cut thin guage steel/flat bar to cover the dia of the new hub seal for pulling and drill to accept the screw rod. Plus use the old inner race track to cover the seal dia.

4. Use a CD as a washer between your steel plate and new seal when pulling in the seals. (CD hole in the centre is perfect Dia for the screw rod)

5. Pull in slowly. I used the wife to hold the spanner and the hub on the bottom nut, while I ran in the top nut, seal side, while constantly monitoring the push in of the seal.

6. Make sure the seal bottoms in the hub correctly, or the distance between the seal and sensor may be too narrow.

Again, all of this only applies if your set up is the same as mine.

Yes, you can buy the seal seperately. I did from Inchcape. Approx £3.50 each. I have the P/N somewhere. Let me look.

Thanks for the usefull info.Im sure i have all the stuff needed to pull the seal in buried in my garage! I"ll let you no result after i fit them.I was begining to lose my patience with it & i only replaced bearings on sat.Again thanks to everyone posting info,Its saved me a lot of money &its better than reading a Haynes workshop manual any day!

If using a vice, it must be one big mother to accomodate a hub. DO NOT USE WOOD AGAINST THE SEAL. THIS CAN ALSO CAUSE DAMAGE. Use a CD or other plastic/rubber !

Just noticed in your starter post, you disconnected the battery. Could this cause a another fault code ? I don't know as I have never done this, but have read threads on this topic. Others will have know how on this,

C240 YAZ.I have just finished replacing the inner bearing seals.pressed them in with my large vice(the jaws open to 200mm.yes its a large 1)just been on approx half mile drive & im pleased to report all the faults are cured.I tried the cruise control(when the faults were showing & it didnt work),but it dose now.
When i purchased the seals from MB sheffield, the guy in parts dept.was not aware they had to be pressed in,or fitted using a puller.& that damage can be caused by tapping them in.It would be a good idear&save a lot of trouble to the diy people if the wheel bearing kit came with a advice/warning document.

Glad you got it sorted.

My opinion is, that most 203s with this set up, are not old enough to have the wheel bearings replaced, so many MB techs or DIYers have never had to replace them, thus never encountered the problem. Maybe not.

I put that down to a good sign, that MB wheel bearings last for a long time before needing to be replaced. I only changed mine because I had a set, so changed them for peace of mind.

There is a special MB tool (puller) for doing the job, but unsure how many dealerships have one.

Not worth the expence of a DIYer buying one, for a one off job, so the screw rod, I settled for.

If you diconnected the battery for sure some electronic componnents went to sleep, see my thread "S55 problems" you will need star diagnostics to wake up the components

My car has covered 85k.Purchased with 79k.with FSH(all bar one mb)
The old bearings were slightly wining, above 40mph,but more vocal when cornering at speed.I have herd a lot worse. On inspection, the bearing races were discoloured,so i decided to renew the front pair for piece of mind.
The rear N/S has a slight wine above 60mph.When i jacked car up &spun rear wheels the N/S,is slightly noisy, where as the R/O/S is almost silent.
Im going to change the R/N/S in the near future
