Fight back!!

What cars have gone down, I do not follow all of these post, just curious

Anything in the lower emission categories.

Cars used to be rated on engine size, now it's emissions.

The minimum charge was £120 now it's £0 for below 100g/km but more realistically £35 for low emission cars. This figure is set to REDUCE next year to £30.

Higher emission vehicles are going to pay more RFL.

In the paper today QUOTE Greedy traders pushed oil prices to a new record of over $126 a barrel yesterday.
With petrol prices already at a record high,Luke Bosdet of the AA fumed: "They have no thought about the impact on everyone else."

See what you have to say about that Dieselman.

You seem to know everything that nobody else seems to,my thread was in reply to where was the extra tax coming from and that was two that he had thought up and this effects everything to put up the cost of living.

Not sure what that thas to do with motoring.?

To keep this motoring related, what about all the drivers whose car tax has GONE DOWN as a result of the emissions bandings.?

Nothing to do with motoring just stating a fact that is what the forum is all about lots of members drift off the topic some times.

That's what this forum is for if you read a lot of the general it is genuine moans

It has obviously got a lot bigger since you joined so you are going to get more varied comments because we are not all the same.
Nothing wrong with a good moan sometimes if you don't like people moaning (don't read and don't comment)

Had lunch, time to respond..

The thread had become one of the usual general political moan about taxation being the reason for high fuel prices.

As I said that is only partially true but the Tax element is proportionately less then it has been.
The reason why fuel prices have escallated is due to the cost of oil rising.
You have confirmed this with your post. Thank You.

Obviously the receipts from road fuel bring in a substantial revenue for HMG so would need to be found from elsewhere if not collected via this meduim.

Given that the Government is mandated to reduce pollution and energy usage the system of taxing by the unit of oil consumed appears a sound one and should encourage users to think about methods of using less oil.

Assuming the tax from road fuel went to another source.

How would you feel about paying an additional £1000 Community Charge and driving a car that achieves say 50mpg and your neighbour driving one that achieves 15mpg but you both pay the same?

You would be subsidising their excess usage and there would be no encouragement for them to reduce said consumption.

This is why the tax on fuel will remain high and the road tax system has changed to favour low emission vehicles.
The sums of money aren't great but it focusses peoples minds.

If people want cheaper fuel stop consuming so much of it then the price will drop.
this includes all energy medium as oil is used for producing electricity in some places, so your new super-dooper TV which uses more electricity is actually pushing up the price of energy including oil.

BTW:
I don't claim to know everything but when a topic is being discussed where I have either an interest or some knowledge I go looking for more information, then I post.

Tax has to come from somewhere so if it wasn't fuel duty it would be from somewhere else.

Not necessarily. How about the government doing something radical like cutting public spending?

So ranting on this forum will reduce public spending will it.?

I would like to live in a low tax environment but that just isn't going to happen.

Across the EU all countries have a very similar total tax take from their citizens, it's just taken in different ways.

And isn't that politics as opposed to motoring costs.?

We pay more tax as a percentage of GDP than Germany.

thats politics for you.

erm, I'm not ranting!

Just taking issue with your point that tax has to come from somewhere. It doesnt.

I didn't mean you per-se. Just the thread had turned into a rant about tax......AGAIN..

If we don't want to pay tax what services would we like to forsake.?

I personally might prefer PAYG but that would probably not be fair on people with less disposible income or on families.

There has to be a balance.

I'm not saying you might not be right about 'wastage' of funds due to inefficiency, but that's not for here.

and none of this will make the original post valid, or effective.

That is exactly the same as boycotting Mercedes as they are too expensive, and we won't buy one until they drop the price.

Total nonsense.

No it's not.

Can everbody nationally STOP buying Merceds cars please as when the price tumbles I might fancy a new one..:)

Good point.

I rescind my earlier post.

Please buy lots of fords and other such rubbish so that they have to put the price up on those and lower mercedes prices.

this will also have to added benefit of reducing congestion and giving more work to local garages increasing local investment. (Due to other inferior cars breaking down so much, and the outrageous costs of buying a new one mean they will spend money having them fixed, keeping them off the road longer)

AMEN! :bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana:

Reykjavik is the most expensive capital in the world with a cup of coffee at £6 followed by Helsinki at £4
Do the people from there come onto the forum complaining, no they dont, even nearer to home is Danmark with their silly car tax. Take Ireland as well that pay twice as much as us on car tax.

One can moan till the cows come home, but it could be worse tomorrow. Why not keep your perfectly good tubed TV for another couple of years to off set it, rather than getting a flat one because the man next door has one
