Fitting dashcam...what and where?

Hey buddy, that's approaching stereotypical racism! The country of origin shouldn't matter. Balckvue is made in Korea, a bastion of industrial manufacturing and knowledge, just as China. I'd be proud to have 'Chinese' tyres on my car as long as they performed to my satisfaction (I'm not a boy racer doing track days), and were road legal... Far too much snobbery for those that maybe don't have deep pockets.

You miss my point. A cheap camera will always be just that as it's not had the development nor will it use quality components. I don't mind buying cheap items but they have to offer value for money. I use a Blackvue DR590W, which is completely hidden behind my mirror. Blackvue use the Sony Starvis sensor which is one of the best available. I don't have deep pockets but live by my Dads wisdom.....Pay Cheap, Pay Twice

This for the price is a no-brainer. Nextbase are crap as i had one that died

You really do like your generalisations, don't you! LOL My Mercedes was literally sent to the scrap yard last month, far too many faults that outweighed the value of the car. I was unlucky and got a lemon, I don't think 'all Mercedes are crap'... I currently have a 'Nextbase' DAB converter in my current car, an excellent product well priced, you were unlucky, sometimes sh1t happens.

BlackVue spend the money on the image sensor and the software. No point having a screen if the sensor is rubbish and can’t make out numberplates.

I have a blackvue in my SL which replaced a Nextbase that died after 18months. You pays your money ......
Do you know how it is wired?

I think that there is a balance to be had & that camera looks quite reasonable.

I always used to buy the best I could afford (even when I did not have a lot to spend) - I now tend to spend "fit for purpose" as I have so many 'top quality' items that have way outlasted their usefulness.

My wife insisted on some "best money can buy" pots for the kitchen 20 years ago ...She is sick of them & wants to replace them. I'm not letting that happen as they are still top quality and look new.

thinkware F770 or F800 do front and rear in one. They are a decent alternative to blackvue and have a parking mode too but no cloud option. maybe the 800 pro might but I haven't checked

Strange logic that if you spend £40k on a car that you must automatically spend a lot of money on everything because of that.

Personal choice what you spend how much money on what...

There are always people that think spending more gets you more, it's not always the case, but even when it is you don't always NEED "more", if I buy a £100 dash cam and it lasts as long as I keep the car that's good enough for me.

I could leave the cam in the car when it sells and buy another one for the next car which IMO is a better bet than buying one for £300 and then keeping it for 10 years, uninstalling and reinstalling in cars as i buy and sell, by which time the £100 cams will be far superior anyway.

With the speed at which tech improves and prices drop there really isn't much point keeping this kind of stuff for a long time and the "£40k car needs an expensive dash cam" argument is flawed anyway, who is to say which cam is the equivalent of a £40k car? In some peoples minds any car under 60 grand is povo spec, pricing is relative not absolute, much the same as cam choice would be.

I have expensive pilot sport 4 tyres on my car when someone with a brand new Fiesta worth three times as much as mine is wouldn't see any benefit from them at all, you buy what is appropriate to your needs AND budget, not just automatically buy the most expensive.

Spend 20k, 30k, 40k on a car and stick a £50 camera in it. May as well buy Chinese tyres too......

I don't think the price of the car has anything to do with the price of the dashcam. Whether one has a cheap car or an expensive one they might want to protect it just the same. I think the days of using "Chinese made" as an indication of cheap and low quality are long gone. After all most of our high end products are made in China.

However, Blackvue are so much more expensive than the Nextbase models because they are better made IMHO.

Fitted DR590W-2CH in both vehicles and very pleased - can use mobile phone to access live view via wi-fi and can easily copy clips to phone using "internal memory" feature.

When I was saying that Blackvue are much more expensive than Nextbase I was talking about the £700+ models that they have on their website which in my opinion are extortionate.

The DR590W 2ch model seems quite reasonable (especially if bought on a sale) however do I not need to buy the battery pack as well if I want to use the Parking mode?

You will need some sort of battery pack whichever brand of camera you buy or parking mode will drain the cars battery

Resurrecting this thread because I’ve seen some decent offers on Blackvue and thinking of installing one. Now, what type of battery pack can I get for it if I want to use the parking mode? Can I get a cheap battery pack or do I have to buy their expensive one?

One set of advice is to go capacitor, not battery.

Does mean you don't get parking mode unless you wire it to permanent live though....

merry christmas all!
please define "cheap battery pack" price range . you shouldn't be limited to their offering as the connections to the battery pack terminal should be standard I imagine

Just fitted one of these to my A - class.

Really impressed. Had a nextbase from Halfords, so many problems got fed up of it and returned.

Here's my review

Huge upgrade on my old Dashcam

Showing it in real UK weather use.

Easy rear install as it's only a USB C lead, which does data and power.
