I had such a horribly frustrating time with my 3G iPhone having installed the new iOS4 download. Hanging, crashing and sluggish, the phone was very nearly thrown to the pavement several times.
This evening I backed up my iPhone (sync with iTunes as normal).
• Then hit the restore button
• Followed prompts
• Restore failed
• Restart machine
• Restore failed
•*Updating iPhone
•*Progress bar creeps along
•*Success - all reinstated and the iPhone is back up to normal speed
WARNING
I very nearly booked an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar since during this process, my iPhone was out of action. It looked like there was no way of fixing the thing and started to regret the 'restore' procedure.
But it worked in the end!
