Foglights

rear ones that bug me more! front dont normally daze you as they are more driving lights on the newer cars, not like the good old hella ones back in the day!

Front ones irritate me as the driver probably thinks that it's 'cool' to have them on or makes the car look better in some wierd way. I suppose that there was a time when foglights were less common on everyday cars.

Rear ones are more likely to be a mistake, except for those berks who put them in because it's raining.

I liked Cibie myself...back in the day.

Modern cars can't be left on. That's to say when you turn your lights off this cancels the fogs as well and so the next time you use your lights the fogs will not go on unless deliberately.

I'm going to start walking round with A3-sized flashcards that say FOGLIGHTS OFF.

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.
[Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

Did the law not used to be that you could only use foglights when it was foggy?
I believe it is now when visability is reduced below is it 100 meters?

Does not matter what the law says. They've all got the bloomin things on tonight!:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

Particularly loved the dazzling effect created by the rear ones in drizzle on the motorway.

It just amazes me, its raining I'm doing 80 but I need to put my foglamps on!:wallbash:
What is the deal with front foglamps, no usable light penetration above 10mph, do they think they look cool?:wallbash:...utter idiots, they should be shot!

Completely agree. What annoys me most is knowing that (for example) other MB drivers are deliberately switching them on simply to look cool. Having had them fitted to several of my previous cars, I can say from some experience that they really are useless in anything but poor visibility.

Unfortunately the latest craze of installing Daylight Running Lights (DRLs) to new cars is replacing the fog light one. Some DRLs are fine as they aren't actually all that bright and operate sensibly (i.e. the Audi ones dim to improve the contrast of direction indicators) but some are penetratingly bright, perhaps too bright. I know it's all led by EU law, but surely the utility is debatable?

Ian.

The really frightening thing is to look at the cars drivers and most of them are well over 30/40 and still thinks its cool.

They must get in car, lights on check, fog lights on check, sitting in a cool manner check, lets go:D

If people want to drive with their front fogs on, so what?
I couldn't care less.
In fact as their use increase awareness and visibility, I don't actually see it as a bad thing generally.
Not much different than the new wave of cars with daytime running lights IMHO.
Rear fogs must only be used when conditions dictate, so are a different matter entirely.

Sorry VTD I cant agree. How much more visible do you need to be when your headlights are already on? I wear glasses and find that the extra un-necessary illumination is dazzling at most and irritating at least. Many older vehicles have them misaligned and pointing all over the place too!

No i don't agree either ....

A worrying trend among the 'yoots' around here is to drive around ( at night ) with their sidelights on and their foglights .... relying solely on the fogs to provide illumination for the road ahead . Some of them even have the terrible 'blue tint' halogens in them so the illumination is truly awful.

The spread and distance of light is terrible , someone will get killed eventually.

Daytime running lights are usually no brighter than sidelights , so cause no dazzling.

My comments are aimed at those whose fog lights are legal, aligned correctly and working properly.
You cannot legislate for the tw@ts who drive around with misaligned, faulty or with inappropriate bulbs installed. In which case, I would totally agree that their use is illegal and dangerous.
I was actually thinking more of the smaller, below the bumper type of fog light as fitted to my W203. In essence more of auxiliary driving lights more than true fog lamps.
I often use mine in preference to dipped headlamps during the hours of pre-dusk when sidelights aren't quite enough and dipped headlamps are simply unnecessary.
Just to make myself more visible to other road users.
Not for any "look at me, Ive got fog lamps" reason. Most cars have them nowadays anyway, so hardly a style statement.

It's even worse for us bikers, a halo of red in your line of sight through the visor. They should be defenestrated.

LOL, I had to look that word up! I agree whole heartedly:thumb:
