Over the last few months I've been reading more posts on motoring forums than in previous years regarding people getting speed limit infraction fines from France.

I was speaking with "someone who knows" at the weekend and learned that in the first six months of this year the French authorities have made in excess of 247,000 requests for Registered Keeper information from the DVLA.

Clearly they are following up speed camera detections against UK registered vehicles much more rigorously than they used to, so if you're planning to drive in France stick to the limits or be prepared for an unwelcome demand for money to drop through your letterbox.

I got a 45 Euro fine last month for being 1 km/h over the (70) limit. My speed was measured at 76 km/h but the figure used for the purposes of determining the fine was 71.

I went through in July and France has certainly got way more cameras than they ever used to but nearly every one I saw had been vandalised. Assume that was the “yellow vests”. Good advice though. They will also fine you roadside. The days of blasting down the autoroute at whatever speed you want have gone sadly.

This anti brit speeding thing is not new. A few years ago travelling in a long train of traffic heading to the dordogne (perhaps 20 cars) all doing exactly the same speed on an A road or whatever they call them (non motorway) the police had set up a camera and were only pulling over the Brits and letting all the French go. Cost me 100 eu at the time whilst the French drivers got off scott free. Vive La France.

Are you certain the French drivers didn't get a letter through the post?

How does everyone feel about Frenchies speeding over here in the UK and not being penalised?

Apart from a quick dash from the chunnel to the Belgian border, the only time I've driven in France in recent years is to Le Mans and back. As everyone knows, you just don't speed on Le Mans weekend - all Police leave cancelled and more speed traps than you can shake a stick at. I stuck the cruise on at 79 and left it there.

Well, I say everyone - apparently it had missed the two guys in British-registered Ferraris who came haring past me at one point, doing 120+. But sure enough, a few miles down the road there they were in a layby with the Gendarmes having a word. Hope they'd remembered their wallets..

Cheers,

Gaz

I saw similar, in fact identical, in France some years ago. I was surprised to see the Ferrari guy shouting wildly at the French copper, I have no idea what he was hoping that would achieve, tit.

yup - you can always tell the newbies to LM...or the wallabies who don't listen....

easy money from the French, esp within 50 miles of the ferry ports...

we still go the old N road routes...

Good point but it was 25 years ago and a speed gun (my mistake ) not a camera. So i expect they would be stopped in the same way that we were when caught by gun in those days....but you may be right.

"If it wasn't for us mate you lot would still be under the jackboot !"

The French can stick their autoroutes, if I'm gonna get done for speeding it'll be by a good old British bobby!

Well the few times I drive in France I have a Garmin sat nav stuck on the screen with the updated speed camera info and I follow that making sure I keep just under what it says,it is surprising when you are on minor roads near small towns and villages rhe speed limit goes up and down like a yo yo,as of now I have not paid the fench a red cent.

I believe that if you are caught in France with that the fine will make you wish you’d been caught speeding...

Indeed, its illegal to use a speed camera detector in France along with other countries.

"French police law states that it is forbidden to carry any device that can detect the use of speed cameras. This also includes devices such as Sat Navs that you can set them to inform you of any speed cameras that you are approaching; this is usually set on your POI "

Stuck on the window is a bit of a giveaway as well.
