Fuel filter confusion

E220 Blue Efficiency. Estate.
Ive just received a new mann fuel filter. It came without the heater unit with the push fit receiver plug. It had a yellow rubber plug in place. Am i supposed to swop over the heater unit from the old filter or have i got the wrong filter. According to the Mann catalogue I’ve got the right filter. As the title reads, confused.

What engine does your 240 CLK have?

I would say wrong filter. The heater element is fitted to (some) later filters, ie the OM642 has three different filters. Try putting your make/model on ECP website (others are available :)) and it should show if there's more than one type.

Thats the problem. I bought it from ECP and it shows three compatible filters. Bosch, Mann and Fram And all three are without the heater plug. Considering the filter operates under pressure the yellow bung plug pulls out relatively easy and its that that makes me think the heater element is interchangeable. It also comes with a new o ring.

I don't suppose you've removed the old filter yet? You'll be able to the make and model.

No, the old filter is still in place. I don’t want to try and remove the heater element for fear of damaging it. Thats why I’m looking for the definitive answer as to wether the element is interchangeable.

Assuming I've inputted the correct model details into another factor's site, it clearly shows two types of filter, one of which has a heater element.

And ECP appear to list one with the heater element as well (albeit they call it a 2.2 engine rather than 2.1), unless I'm mistaken.

TBH I’ve not tried GSF only ECP. So its becoming obvious that I’ve got the wrong filter. It doesn’t say much for ECP who only offer three filters all without the heater element. Manns website also confirms the filter i have is correct but it does offer another filter with the element attached.

Ive just double checked. It’s showing my car as the 2.2 engine and still only showing the three filters without heating element.

We must be looking at different things.

If I click on the (ECP) link I attached, then the second-down set of filters, then the Mann one at £142.99, the picture shows the heater element and the write-up in the fitment details section states 'heater element'. It's there when I look!

ECP Product code 503220529

In fact, the third filter down, yet another different filter, also has a heater element but also a connection for water suction.

If in doubt, try a MB dealer (some sell online, Newcastle etc..) and buy using your VIN, then it will be the correct one.

Welcome to the world of ECP.
Notice how they also never give you the manufacturers parts number for the part your ordering.

Easiest thing to do is to post your VIN here and ask or contact a MB dealer direct for the correct part.

I've just stuck a reg. for a W212 with an OM651 into their site.
They list filters with and without the heater even though I know the car needs one.

Look-up the online catalogues of Mann, Knecht, Mahle, Bosch, Etc.

Check the part number for your engine on the filter manufacturers' websites.

Then Google it and buy where cheapest.

My advise is to never rely on motor factors to tell you which part you need, instead arm yourself with the part number based on your own research and simply buy that.

Or, take it back ask Newcastle MB for the part on ebay u will get it delivered in 2 days and it will be the right one.

You’re right I’ve found it now. If i search by my registration number which i did it returned filters without the heater. If i search by their drop down and select the vehicle it returned a whole load of filters all with the heater element. Strange but the car description on both searches was identical.

So i think its obvious i have the incorrect filter. So what exactly goes in the hole where the yellow rubber plug is, and what does the o ring seal.

I tried once removing the heater , so I could reuse it. It didn't look as if it wanted to be removed ,so I ended up buying a bosch filter with heater , something like £36 iirc.
