Hi Guy's and Guyes's
I have been looking through the archives of threads and found a lot of people have had problems with iregular fuel readings due to a faulty sender units, :(

Question is does anybody know of anyone who has had any problems with the ML gauge/sender unit,(gauge is reading 3/4, when the tank is brimmed, and starts to go down as though 3/4 was the full mark) and has anybody tackeled the problem as a diy job or know of anyone who has done this job, instead of taking it to the stealers. :D

If so, was it a hard job, and what did it involve(Removal of seats carpet etc).or is it a stealership job only

Advice would be greatfuly recived

Paul (If this posting is in the wrong section sorry)

Hi. I had a C220CDI with the same problem. As the car was still under warranty I let the dealer rectify the fault. I believe that they had to take out the rear seats to get at the tank, drain/syphon it and replace the sender units (2). It still didn't work so they had to do it all again!

I had a similar problem with my ML. It would read empty with the light on, drive it till the needle came out the other side of the warning light zone, fill it up and only get 62 litres into it max. With an 83 litre tank, it was still almost a quarter full! I never bothered to get it fixed.

It will def involve stripping the rear seats out of a saloon (not sure about the ML) in order to rectify the problem. Had a faulty valve that was noisy in the fuel tank and was also getting a duff reading at times which would rectify itself after a short period though, in one of the family's S Class's and in order to get to it alot of stripping was involved by the Stealer's and it was the foreman working on the car. Luckily, the car was under warranty.

my fuel gauge is all over the shop at the moment. MB quoted £360 to change the left and right sender unit plus 2 1/2 hours labour. Steve is doing it for £185 on thursday.

Thanks to you all for your replies, :)

Doodi,
I know the ML fuel gauge is on the top of the tank, and there is only one sender as the ML is a pre-face lift, and it is out of warranty. :(

Alfie,
I tend to agree with leaving it,But it's the wife's every day car,and she say's it's broke so it needs fixing and who am i to disagree.  :D

Flash,
There is no noise in the tank area ,and i know that the fuel pump is seperate from the sender unit as the later models have a combined sender and pump assembly, and the ML is out of warranty :(

R2D2,
I am glad that i only have one sender unit to change, and thank you for the quote, (" MB quoted £360 to change the left and right sender unit plus 2 1/2 hours labour.") at least i know what i will be paying per hour at the stealers.

Whey hay! :)

Fuel sender unit has soughted it's self out. :D

I run the ML fuel down to what i assumed was a low level which was after 250miles (juicing it a lotta bit) and all of a sudden the fuel gauge went up to half a tank after being down close to the lighted area(Light was not on).

So a result in the way i did not expect, after what was said in the earlier posts i was etheir going to get it fixed or live with it.

What i must have done wrong, was to fill the ML up to the brim, when the tank was above 3/4 full. After all it only took £10 to fill it, (from where it was), it caused me a headache, thinking the sender unit was up the creek,So i wont be doing that again.

That's great if your problem has sorted itself out, lets hope it stays sorted.

It's such a shame though that on supposedly "premium quality" cars like ours you don't want to fill up the tank for fear of the gauge becoming erratic. It is the principal of it that bugged me more than anything when I had a similar problem to you.
