G it's Electric!

I saw that article - and question the wisdom of using the battery assembly as surrogate cross-braces in a ladder frame chassis...

Yes, understood. Then again, the vast majority of current cars rely on a bonded in windscreens to add considerably to the torsional rigidity of the shell.
On paper, that doesn't sound like a great plan. In practice in works fine, but I understand reservations of using a battery pack as a structural item.
I'm sure Mercedes will have done at least a few miles of testing.

Don't put too much luggage in it or you'll be over the post 1997 licence limit ...

For an all up weight of 3200kg, it's somewhat lacking in utility. Surely this type of vehicle should be expected to have towing capacity - generous towing capacity.

No many EVs do.....its not that they cant....plenty of weight and torque is perfect for towing,...it thats they are frightened of the bad publicity when you only get less than half the claimed range with a caravan on the back. Thats why the old IPace only had a puny 750kg tow limit!!.....slightly less than a Ford Fiesta!!

I like towing, I like Mercedes SUVs and I like EVs however even I wouldn’t buy one for the purposes of towing. The number of people who would choose to tow with the the electric G would be tiny, and the few that need to tow would probably have another car for towing duties. Roll forwards 10-15 years and that might be different.

Cybertruck has 1130kg payload and can tow 5000kg.

You're missing the point here.... the last sentence in the quoted paragraph below is key:

"According to Mercedes, what’s more important is its abilities off road. It can tackle the famous Schökl pass 14 times before running out of battery, whereas the G63 will only be able to do it six times before needing a fill of super-unleaded. One tells oneself whatever one needs to justify it, I suppose"

;)

I can see two major markets for this car.

Wealthy Gulf Royals who must have one of everything (even, ironically, non-petrol cars).

Actors, YouTubers, drug dealers, and other show-offs who'll drive it around town and pose for photos.

As for farmers, hunters, etc - not so much.

So the smart money would buy a diesel which would probably tackle the Schokl Pass over 20 times?

Isn’t that that broadly describing the current audience for the petrol G63 anyway? 🫣😅

Yes it does. There's a mother at my grandmother's nursery that has one. Beautiful beasts, I have to say (not the mother and her daughter... the G63s). Very useful for bringing the kids to school....

Anyone else read the the title of this thread in the style of an Oasis song?
