G-Wagon Advice Needed.

I might sell the E-Class to be honest, it's a good car but it's not been getting much use just lately, so I might use the G-Wagon for the family thing.

See if I put a 55 AMG lump in, that'd make it a G55 AMG then. Well that's what I keep saying to myself anyway...

You keep coming back to 211s and have always rated the car. I know you've got a family and if the G replaces the 211 you'll be putting your nearest and dearest into a car that's not nearly as safe as the car you have just now. A boring and unenthusiastic post I know but it's a point worth raising. It's a fun replacement to your E30 but as a main car I think it's not the best idea

I'm just brain storming at the minute Steve, to be honest.

One option could be to sell my car for about £12kish and buy a 2004ish W211 E320 CDi with roughly one half of the money and then buy a G-Wagon with the other half. and modify it up to how I want it.

For the price I'm getting this at, it would be impossible to get to twenty grand...;)

But the lure of a profit....

That's not a half bad one although if I were you I'd be looking at an r129 SL...

Cards on the table time; I've been offered a 230 for the right money.

Mechanically sound, bodywork is almost spotless.

The budget for the work would be about . I know these things aren't cheap for parts but I always find a way to get things done for the right price.

Maybe a W210 E55 as a donor....hmmmm:devil:

230GE + w202 C220 CDI = G220 CDI.

230GE + w208 230k = G230 kompressor.

Decent power output, good on fuel, will bolt in easily, within budget. Also you can sell of the donnor car in parts.

It needs to be at least a proper four seater because whatever 'toy' I choose is for the children as well as me.

Well, that's what I told the wife anyway...

Mazda RX8 are silly money these days - oil and fuel consumption blah blah blah - but as a 4 seater w/e car it's an option.

That 230K engine could be the way forward if it's not too much of a ball-ache.

I'd buy a W202 C230k manual though and use the interior as well.

In theory then, should a 230k engine go straight in?

Hello

My dad had a 230GE manual years and years ago (almost new when he bought it and I think it was C reg)

I loved it and still LOVE the G glass. Every year I go to the Geneva show and every year if I had to have one car it would be a G wagon (ok the Brabus one...but you get the idea) the shape etc has not changed since my dads really?

Luckily the interior and engines have...

I also used to go on off road days with my brother and the G wagen is VERY good off road, you can lock the diffs from inside the cab and does very very well on the rough stuff.

I can see you idea as fun 'car' but if your like me you WILL want it looking right (£££) and I would try and replicate the newer models so even more (£££) as it happends my wife doesn't like them one bit so I'm unlikley to buy one.

How about this one?

1987 Mercedes-Benz G WAGON Estate 2746cc Petrol,Automatic,UNFINISHED PROJECT. | eBay

Or for one that is ready to use...although I don't like gold (same inside as my dads)
1988 Mercedes-Benz G WAGON 300GD LWB long wheel base version | eBay

Then as you say get a W211 for 6/7K with your plate on it no one will know :)

I looked into a G a few years ago, and after a lot o searching finally gave up due to the amount of rubbish I found, and not wanting to spend £7k plus.

They DO have plenty of mechanical problems.

The ones I remember are diff locks, propshafts, exhausts (v. expensive apparently). Rust is also an issue, but if yours is sound that's great.

I'd try a 24v non turbo diesel, there is a guy in Barnstaple who does all sorts of mental engine conversions for Mercedes like 3.0 24v into 190's and V8s into W123s. I don't know his name but Rob Parker from 3 Pointed Parts near Taunton will, and will probably be able to supply you with an engine of your choice to boot.

I've toyed with the idea of getting the I6 diesel from a W124 into my LWB Land Rover, or even a I5 from a W123. The problems I am told with the W210 turbo diesels is throttle bodies and fly by wire plus steering boxes etc etc being fouled by turbos, pipes and intercoolers.

Sounds like fun to me!

Good luck

The 230k engine (m111) will bolt in using the original gearbox and engine mounts. That should get you to 195hp, before you start to play with it.

This guy has swaped the engine and loom in to w124, if it works in the w124, it works in the g wagon.:thumb:

I watched an RX8 go through the auction on tuesday and it was cheap yet still no one bid on it.

A 190e Cosworth is still on my list, but I am starting to 'want' a G-Wagon more than anything else.

I wouldn't be worrying about engine mounts if you're talking about a bespoke engine conversion, it's the least of your worries. You need to be thinking of compatible gearboxes which will handle the torque of the new engine, and couple up to the transfer case, bespoke propshafts, also things like a bespoke baffled sump as its a proper off roader. Exhaust you can do in stainless bespoke so no problem there.
Drive an old 460, then a later 463, then decide your starting point. No matter what you do to a 460 it will still be utilitarian/basic in driving experience, whereas a 463 will be much more car like, and also has a better 4x4 system for the non-serious off roader.
I've had 3 of them so am not totally talking "blind". Last one was a very very nice high spec 280gel. Sold just before prices ballooned :( had I sold it 6 months later I would have doubled/tripled my money.
Would I have another one? Only a 463, and only when prices get sensible again. This is why I run a non-mb 4x4 now (Discovery).

The G-Wagen I've got in mind is on a G-Reg.

I've had a scout about and that seems to be the year that they changed from a 460 to a 463, so it's all a bit baffling at the minute.

Now we're talking!!!!!:devil::devil::devil:
