As I have unexpectedly become a 2 car family (which only needs one...)

Those of you with a second car brought out occassionally, how often do you actually get out in your none daily car, and what do you do in it?

Ade its for exactly this issue i have a convertible as my garage queen (both mine are garaged though)
If its a weekend and sunny / dry or Im having a half day Im in the DB9, any normal or wet day Im in the daily runner.
If I had 2 hard tops I would struggle to make my mind up what to drive as we are normally 2 up max so seats dont count in the decision.
Today was as Aston day and its always a treat !!

I try to get mine out at least once every couple of weeks... although the SL doesnt get used in winter at all.. and the widebody has yet to feel rain!

Keep them moving otherwise things start to go wrong!

:D I thought this thread was about something totally different :o.

My W203 doesn't seem to get used much, it's still only done 14000 miles! We tend to use the wife's VW Lupo most of the time.

Funny you should say that. In March 08 we bought a new VW Fox for wifie. To date she's managed a total of 3800miles. Two deep ruts between house and Tesco. Nice little car though.

I sold my SEC through sheer lack of use (mainly due to the fact Mrs M said it looked like some sort of gangsters car and she refused to get in it - therefore it really got little use).

If I did get a second car now it would probably be an SL or something similar for the reasons expalined by Dave above.

Mrs M would like to be seen in an R230 which means it's more likely to get used. However getting her in and out of it is a different matter altogether!

It would get so little use though that I'm not entirely sure it would be worth while. Which is part of the reason I decided on getting a car more expensve than I normally would as a daily driver which can also be enjoyed as a weekend car also. (A RR Sport)

I look at Talbir's or Jays list of cars, and as much as I'd like any number of them I'm not entirely sure they would get driven at all.

An even more extreme example is Nev who has upwards of 20 cars (some get posted on here ocassionaly) many of his are SORN, he just actually likes collecting them and hardly drives them at all.

We have 3 cars. Two are used daily and the last one on sunny weekends only. But as its been raining for the last few days and I've been away on others, I tend to just make sure the battery is topped up at all times (using a trickle charger) so that I can use it should I want to.

I had one car for normal use and at one point three in off-site garaging (you can't get a residents permit for more than one here). As there was no charging available it became a thorough pita keeping the Bentley charged in particular (the immobiliser etc drain was considerable). In the end I sold the lot as I hardly got to use my main car, let alone the Porsche, Morgan and Bentley. Two cars in a household of two is different though (I am a happy single) so I am sure you can get meaningful use out of it, and holding it isn't going to be that expensive (real classic car policy etc). It is such a lovely car too, and it will no doubt end up being turned into some hideous monster car if the person who buys it is a wrong-un. The heritage grill is also worth preserving for the nation.

Gave it a clean and quick polish today and found myself driving around puddles on the way to Crystal Palace Park...

Is there such a thing as a 'side of the road Queen' as I have unfortunately no garage..

I fear this is the beginning of the end...

^ know what you mean but try to hang on to it

On the plus side with a second car like your CE, you should be able to run it for peanuts and it won't lose a penny in depreciation now either :)

Although not garaged, you might find someone who'll do classic insurance at a good price, annual maintenance won't be much with low mileage use etc.

Benefits of a spare car always good - plus you'll still be a Mercedes owner on here and elsewhere

P.S - It looks great in the photo gallery, can't believe you've not shown it off in all it's glory before! :) :)

My MR2 used to be a daily car, and I decided to keep it when I bought my then new Astra Coupe as my new daily car. I kept the MR2 for maybe 6 months or so but just didn't get round to driving it. Several large repairs followed which was out of character - the dealer said I could expect more if I didn't use it regularly, so it had to go. Sniffle.

Seeing the pictures, which are glorious, I hope it goes to a good home.

Our SL doesn't get used much, but being on a maintenance charger in the garage it's always ready for use at short notice.

I do use it if I'm going to meetings or seminars ... with 3 kids now we can't all fit in it any more :(

I reckon it's barely depreciating, and servicing / tax / insurance don't cost too much. So it's not really an excessive luxury (unlike Mrs BTB's horse!).

Thanks Will

But I now have a competent and well appointed sensible car for all that..

Thanks for the responses..

Extending this thread, what's the lowdown on car covers?

Had a Tyvek type bike cover which was fine on the bike, but regular use meant it picked up loads of muck as it touched the ground around the perimeter, which caused more damage than not using the cover...

Also the local cats liked to sharpen their claws on it, shredding the front and back.

Any tips? Carcoon thingy not really an option..
