2 weeks ago the car dropped into limp home mode (2nd gear only) and stayed there, visit to local dealer identified broken selector shaft in gearbox. New gearbox and torque convertor later car rollling again. Merc not interested in stumping up anything towards it as car is 3.1/2 and 96K miles.
All I can hope is that no one else has the same expense!!!

OUCH!

Were there any audible or other warnings before it was going to go?

Sorry to hear of your problem. Out of interest, how much did they charge for a new tranny and torque convertor?

Gearbox info

Very few warning signs, it stuck in 3rd as I pulled out of the services on the M5, reset when I shut down and restarted, then ran faultlessly for 120miles with the van on the back. Did similar solo next morning, then remained in limp home.

No funny noises, only a bit of a clunk when shifting into or out of drive when in limp home mode. Dealer not seen that failure before and surprised when MB refused to contribute! I'm going to try a letter but not holding out much hope.
For info, Gearbox £1500 (reasonable I thought considering) Torque convertor £700 (necessary as the oil was full of metal!)
Labour and VAT the killer
New box fine.
Bank balance empty
