I think I know the answer to this already but I'm just hoping someone can suggest a more wallet friendly suggestion.

My gearbox was suffering from revs flaring which a fluid change mostly cured but driving the car today I noticed the gearbox not changing up or down and seemed to be stuck in a single gear...40mph was coming up at 4000rpm.

I suspect the gearbox is knackered and need replacing but can anyone suggest any other cures?

thanks

MAS sensor? try disconnecting it and see if there are any changes.

It probably won't be an air mass sensor. Get the fault codes read. It may come up with a code. Remove the sump pan and check for any metal.
Try a valve body if there is no metal. They are available second hand. A new box may not be the solution.

It's booked into a specialist on Friday for a diagnostic test. Hopefully it'd not the 'box that's blown.

Had the same the SEC, knackered box, pump on the back wears out when low on fluid according to gearbox bloke I used, on a C36 it might be worth reconditioning where as on mine it was easier to chuck another box in from ebay, stick an ad in the wanted/classified and see who can help, also look on ebay for people who break mercs which is were I found mine,

hope this helps, it is always horrible to suspect something expensive is broken

I think it would be best to look for a good one from breakers etc. if it is knackered as I got some prices to have my 4 speed reconditioned and it was about £1500 worth it I guess if you were to keep the car for a few more years...

Just for reference, I'm sure MB sell new gearboxes for less than £2k - possibly worthwhile if you were keeping the car for some time :)

Yeah defiantly worth doing if your keeping the car, but would MB still have a box for say my old 124??

That is very reasonable though, I have to say I'm usually surprised when getting prices from the dealer there really not that bad for price...:)

They stock most parts for 124's including boxes

If it is a 722.6 Gearbox, it is most probably the speed sensor / controller. This part is inside the sump and costs about £130 from mercs.

just to update.

a 'box rebuild wasn't required *pheeew!!*

turns out the solenoid sensor plate needed replacing and the pressure regulator spring was broken.

now all fixed and full throttle is on again! :bannana: :bannana:

Thankls for the solution.
