George Fraser, Wembley.

He's always got the chance, he is well aware of this forum and has attended at least two forum GTGs from my memory.

There is a lot stacked against him here it would appear and comments such as these are not new, you will find similar threads dating back some time.

Well as administrator why not make the effort to call him and let him know what is being said? Otherwise "the best forum ever" starts to drift in to the realms of betterdrivingplease.com .

If he chooses not to address the points raised then fair enough.

There are some remarks being made that are perhaps unwise and should this forum get officially involved?

Is a forum owner legally bound to make sure members do not submit posts that maybe libel?

Depends on the jurisdiction of the location of the server.

Forget that, what about a moral responsibility?

 You pay the court costs and I'll slag 'em off.

I think you'll find George has a moral responsibility to his customers. He is well aware of the letters published in the official owners club Gazette requesting he be removed from the Good Garage Guide.

Forums are, after all, about sharing experiences good and bad. Whilst some threads can snowball (the eBay mockery wasn't something I agreed with) - this seems pretty factual.

Would you expect administrators to contact every main dealer to explain their side of a story for all the complaints that have been made?

which i think has happened as he is not in jan gazette.

I think if GF were to post here, it would only add to the hole that has been dug... most of the points made here are factual and actual experiences... i cant think how he could redeem himself apart from making some drastic changes to his business structure.

So, for those of us in Wembley, where do you folk take their cars now?

Have a little drive round the north circular and take it to Colin Ferns in Richmond ... ;)

Further nails for the coffin

It appears that the less than satisfactory reports I'd read here and on another forum came out a little too late for me! I'd done some research to find a good independent (having read fairly terrible things about London based dealers) and the good reports I'd read about Mr Fraser persuaded me to go there.

George is without doubt a very friendly fellow but I was somewhat taken aback when, having specifically asked for a gearbox oil service along with a fairly substantial list of other work, it obviously hadn't been done. Also the car was returned with a broken door check strap and a knock from the front suspension. To his credit, he carried out the oil change and repaired these items free of charge including collecting and re-delivering the car.

However, as I've already mentioned in other posts to this forum, I only managed about 20 miles before the gearbox sump seal split, had the car recovered to him again that evening where Mr Fraser himself fitted a replacement seal, only for that to fail about 80 miles later. I have since fitted a seal myself and just completed a 2500 mile tour of Europe with no problems so his suggestion that the sump pan was distorted is obviously incorrect (I'm an engineer and checked it before refitting!). In my opinion the failure was caused by a) the bolts being done up too tight (I even asked him for a torque figure to which he replied "nip them up quite tight - they're supposed to be 8Nm which is certainly not "quite tight"!) and b) the sump pan has a locating lug that needs to sit in a slot machined in the gearbox housing and it clearly wasn't which was distorting it i.e. incompetence on the part of the mechanic (and specialist mercedes training isn't require for this!).

Given the above failings, I would not recommend him to anyone and will certainly not be using him in the future. It was certainly disappointing as I rarely use garages, prefering to do the work myself, but was pestered into it by my wife who now wants me to sell the car and take a boring lease vehicle through her work scheme!

Comments about his staff being young are certainly true for some of them but I would not necessarily consider this a problem if they have been properly trained, although I'm certainly not sure this is the case.

I hope this helps people make informed decisions about where they have their car serviced in the future...

Regards

John

Another one bites the dust..

Well at least i know the correct torque setting for an auto sump pan bolt... i always do them quite tight too!

I have been using him for 15 years I have found him very good and thorough. Even down to sending a reminder about my MOT a month before it expires.

Hello all, adding to this thing, I went for an MOT and service at George Fraser's, great chap, and I was happy with the work that was done. That was until I checked the oil level a week later: Overfilled by a lot!
Which reminds me, I MUST check the rear Diff oil level, I had it renewed at the same time. Someone on here had theirs renewed at George Fraser's and it was either not re-filled, or the plug was loose, losing lube and destroying the diff!!

That was me,.... and now my reconditioned diff is also slightly noisy..

Yikes. Sorry to hear it.

On another note completely, you didn't sell a chap from Scotland a grey 1992 300D on 1st Jan 2007 did you? If so I'm driving it around now!

I've had George Fraser do work for me on & off since 1999.

I think it was around 2008-10 that after not seeing him for a while I popped into his workshop in Alperton & noticed that all bar two of his mechanics & an office worker had been replaced.

To summarise, he told me his name had regrettably & rightfully been, in his words "dragged through the mud & he had to get rid of most of his staff."

It's now MB Motors in Alperton & seems to be fine(I never had any bad service-guess I was lucky).
He was always doing too much himself (imo) but now, with extra workshop & office staff seems to be well on top of things.

One of his drivers tells me that bussiness is getting even more "top end" & many more cars are being collected from/delivered to central London addresses.

This is just based on my personal experience having been shocked by reading the negative posts.
