Following on from my previous thread yesterday about tappets.....

Spoke to the good Mr Ferns in Richmond with regards to the tappets (one of which has just started to sound like someone banging a trowel on some scaffolding) ... Colin reckons he can isolate which tappet it is and just change the one.

I know some of you are thinking 'False economy - change them all' , i just haven't got the cash to change them all so its just gonna be the one for now, the engine is sweet except for the tappet.

So i'm dreading Colins reply for a a price , thinking 'its gonna be hundreds' and he says ......... £60 including the tappet. Woo Hoo... :bannana:

And it gets better..... I am off to Cornwall for a week next week, and the only time that Colin can do it is next Wednesday...... so , Dad says its ok, leave it at my place and you can take my car (CLK 430) to Cornwall..... Woo Hoo !!!! :bannana:

Could you tell me how he locates the noisey one, ive just changed the engine oil a week ago now has hyd tappet noise on cold start up

1, with the engine running, years of experience and a stethoscope or a metal object like a socket extension bar should get it down to one or two suspects

2, with the engine switched off see which off the likely culprits has excessive play
