Folks

Daughter is after a GoPro for Christmas. This would not be used strapped to her head, or to confront rampaging motorists or cyclists. It is for personal hobby use mainly outdoors.

What is a good starter pack and where should I buy. I see Argos at around £150 with £30 off. Is that good?

First thing to know is that there are three different GoPros:

Hero4 Black (top version)
Hero4 Silver (lower spec.)
Hero (basic entry-level)

GoPro Official UK Website: The World's Most Versatile Camera

The Silver and Black are a lot more expensive than the Hero. Argos aren't normally particularly cheap but are obviously reputable/reliable. I would personally be looking for some "cyber Monday" deals online today!

For her use, the Hero3+ (outgoing model) would do the job no problem. The 4 has a faster processor and better lens but for everyday use such as hers, not much gain per pound spent just to get the latest, I would say. Have a look at the footage on YouTube (keep in mind that the quality is limited by what YouTube can handle/broadcast). I very nearly bought the 3+ to use as a dash cam the picture quality is so good.

There is very little difference between the 3+ and the 4 apart from the fact that the 4 silver now has a screen which is very useful.

The resolution available on the 4 is something that 99% of users will never ever need. Its the sort of quality required for serious film making.

Bear in mind all the attachments are expensive and I wouldnt really call it value for money.

I use mine for skiing and there is nothing that is as good so I spend the money but there are cheaper alternatives out there for just casual messing about.

Also the new basic GoPro Hero is a cheap but cheerful camera that may suit requirements.

If you want something a bit better then the 3+ with an optional screen has got to be worth it.

If you buy one let me know, I think I still have my Hero3+ screen that I cant use any more. Its as new!
