Okay Guys....so I'm a Mercedes owner once again!

I picked the car up yesterday and drove it back to Blackpool from London.

The car was doing 30mpg (Crusie control at 60mph...I know, I know, Vicar!)

The body work is immaculate (the colour is pretty amazing!) and so is the roof. Two of the four wheels need a refurb but I'm not that bothered becuase I'm going to purchase some new wheels anyway. The engine and gear box seem rock solid. The interior is showing a few signs of wear & tear but hey, this is a 10 year old car so this is to be expected...right?

It's got a decent Alpine headunit, with Bluetooth, iPOD & USB connectivity but the seller also included the original Audio30 and CD Changer. Although the Audio30 looks like it needs a good clean and need a new volume knob.

The seats seem in good shape, especially the rears. The driver one is showing signs of age on the bolster but I have seen much, much worse.

All the gadgets appear to work except for:

Driver side headlamp washer jet, it doesn't pop out but it does spray water as you can see and hear it under the bonnet. Is this an easy fix?

The instrument cluster LCD's all seem in great shape, no dead pixels, although the main centre one is quite difficult to read during the day??

The LCD on the Climate Control has quite a few dead pixels. Is this common? Is it fixable? The Aircon still blows nice and cold.

The electric seats all work okay with the exception of the "multicontour" feature on the passenger side. I can hear air blowing like crazy but nothing inflates. Loose connection / pipe maybe??

Front fog lamps need new bulbs and the 3rd brake light has a couple of dead LEDs.

I test drove it around Finchely and everything seemed mechanically sound but here comes the really bad bits!

I stopped in the services on the M6 on my way home and could hear a buzzing noise....it sounds like the fuel pump to me. The noise seems more apparent after the engine is nice and warm. The seller said the car has been standing for a while and because of this the fuel pump could have picked up some muck from inside the tank. Is this feasible? It doesn't seem to have an affect on performance but is still rather annoying.

After I got it home the wife dropped the roof and took it out for a spin and on her return she said she could here a noise coming from the rear passenger side wheel. So I jumped in and she's right, it sounds like a metallic rubbing noise which is relative to the speed of the car, the noise stops however when you press on the gas...I'm worried it could be a prop shaft. Does that sound probable?

And finally, I noticed both passenger side wheels have a stud missing! Looks like the locking wheel nut key has gone missing at some stage so they've been yanked out but not replaced....WTF!!?? Surprised it got it's MOT with 2 studs missing though!??? What are your thoughts on this?

Sorry about the war and piece but you know what it's like when you buy a second hand car. Just looking for some reassurance before I go full tilt on the seller!

Congrats on purchasing a great car:thumb:Can't answer all your questions re the problems you have noticed with the car but one of the experts will i'm sure. One thing i can't help wondering, seeing as you travelled a long way to buy the car,how come you didn't notice all the things you've mentioned that are wrong on the test drive then negotiate the price/walk away & find another car?

Hi Steve,

The noises (fuel pump & the metallic rubbing noise) did'nt occur on the test drive and if they had I would have walked. The other bit n bobs (bulbs, seat, washer jet etc) I didn't see as deal breakers but relative to the age of the car. I totally didn't check the wheels studs (seriously who would?) especially considering it just had a new MOT.

The car has been supplied with a 12 months warranty, so there some piece of mind...I hope!

Potential money pit and stress magnet.
IMHO - get it into a MB dealer or Ian Walker is near you ? get a FULL report and an estimate to bring it up to road legal and useable condition (you have a dodgy MOT and gawd knows what else)
Once you have the cost of making it good again decide to keep it or reject it - DONT spend any time messing about get a full report on monday

Fair comment,i would get back in touch with the dealer(12mths mot but wheel studs missing?)the least they can do is address some of the problems you have noticed & get the car in a roadworthy/legal condition, good luck:thumb:

Dont stress - just plan
Get it into Walker or MB asap and get a price to fix it op
Say worst case scenario its £1500, its still worth doing as you will have a perfect car for about £10k if its more than this or you have bought a wreck seek immediate redress and dont hesitate to get a solicitors letter remember you have a dodgy MOT to fall back on.
Nice V8 convertibles are worth £10k !!!!

Not sure I'd pay £10K for one of these. I looked at a few and the most expensive was £8.5K. I only paid £6850 for this one which seems about right for the age & mileage.

Yep £10k is way too high.

Don't fret too much, chances are whatever you bought would have a few issues. I'd find an indy local to you, recommended on here, get an all over check and a STAR check done.

The spec looks good. Get an idea of what you need getting done, then as suits get it done. But be sure to keep your car waxed and clean to avoid the rust.

What I meant was on any car you buy you spend money bringing it up to your standard, £10k for a sorted V8 MB isnt a lot for a perfect car but I acknowledge it may not be the cheapest deal on the planet.
I always get any car I own up to as near perfect standard as possible and if I needed a 4 seater V8 rag top £10k would be acceptable if that makes sense :)

Not sure missing one wheel stud on a couple of wheels would be a deal breaker for MOT failure.

I have a car which had the same feature and it sailed through MOTs for a decade like this. Recently had new wheel studs fitted - didn't realise it was quite so easy and cheap to have done!

Missing wheel nuts is an instant failure.

Update: Had my own inspection done and this is what it needs:

1) New rear brake shoes - this is the root cause of the noise coming from the back wheel.

2) New driver side washer jet

3) 4 new tyres

4) New passenger side door seal

5) New fuel pump

6) New vac hose connector to the passenger seat

7) Missing & loose wheel nuts

Obviously a few of these should have been picked up at the MOT which was carried out on the 18th June (the car has only travelled 350 since then). The dealer I bought it from has agreed to pay for the fuel pump and locking wheel nuts but I'm on my own for everything else. I wasn't happy with that situation so I've contacted the MOT Testing Station and complained about the items missed from the MOT. Looks like they might be up for a bit of goodwill.

Are the tyres worn or damaged. If it's just wear, how come they passed the MOT 350 miles ago? Unless they were swapped after the MOT by the seller? ...

They're worn.

God knows how they were missed. Neglect on the MOT testers behalf maybe. Maybe they were swapped afterwards....hmmm that's a thought!

Update:

Okay, so I complained to the company who carried out the MOT and passed it, as there's no way it should have passed. Missing wheel nuts, washer jets not working, illegal reg plates etc. They wanted to test it again, afterwhich it failed on a lot of items as well as a large list of advisories! All four tyres, corrosion on the exhaust, track rod ends, parking brake, washer jets, high level stop light, discoloured indicators, plus a few other items. To say I was annoyed is an understatement! However, as a gesture of goodwill, the company said I could book the car into a garage of my choosing to have ALL the jobs fixed and then they agreed to pick up the bill!!!! Car was booked in today.....practically everything sorted out, just awaiting on a couple of items which are on back order from MB.

What can I say....amazing customer service or what!!?????

Well happy!

Any guesses who the MOT company are????
