Idiot that I am I left the roof down, and yep it rained 5 mins. Got the roof back up had loads of faults including 'display failure' and got home.

1 hour later everything else is ok but I cannot get it out of Park and the auto position indicator is blank. I can get the car to move by using the emergency release. There are no faults on the display

The car is in the garage now 'airing' . Will this dry out or is it a vistit to the stealer?

Sounds like a chip in the console is soaked. I would be pulling apart the console panels about now to let the gear selector electronics dry out. You may not have known that there is a lot of sponge in there and naturally that retains water.

What about driving around with the heat turned all the way up. You can manually release the park position by following the instructions in your manual.

Thanks, if it is still u/s in the morning I'll give it a thrash. too late tonight as I am drowning sorrows.

This morning the defect is still there, cannot get out park, unless I use the overide and then there is only one gear. Checked the fuses and there is not one for transmission. Still says no malfunction on the display.

When in drive I can only select reverse by switching the ignition off.

No indication on the gear indicator.

........Panic over 10 mins with a hair dryer

thanks for the help

Being a Saturday the dealer is closed. Anyone advise how to remove the gear knob and get into the selector sensor?

thanks

Open the ashtray up and give the gear shift console a firm and slow pull upwards near the ashtray end. This will liberate the entire panel and be on the lookout for small copper coloured clips. If they fall down into the void you will not get them out without a major carpet upheaval.

Out with the blow dryer me thinks. Use the lowest heat setting on the highest fan speed.

Thanks, all systems working, surpised that a little drop of rain caused mayhem. You would think that there would be some protection when an idiot leaves the roof down.

thanks again

That's a good idea... if they can have a rain sensor to activate wipers why not have the same sensor tied into the roof mechanism? Then as soon as it rains the roof could auto close.

That is a brilliant idea - but I suppose safety issues come first. You couldn't have auto-closing roofs for fear of things (ie people) being stuck in them.
Would be quite funny though to see car parks with merc soft tops that suddenly all start closing when it starts to rain.

By the sound of things the UK mercs would end up with flat batteries.

Now does snow come on as rain in the sensor ?
