GPS aerial

when putting a gps aerial under the dash where is the best place to locate it?

thanks :)

Personally i would locate in the middle of the dash on the underside of it (the dash). so long as it has a clear view through glass or plastic it will work fine. the signal does not penetrate metal. A couple of pieces of that sticky velcro from robert Dyas/B+Q etc will hold it.

Mine is tywrapped to the upper side of the steel crossbar behind my glove box.

Hi Alfie,
Didn't you post an excellent 'How to' about installing COMAND and the GPS aerial?

Still thinking on mine at the minute. The aerial plugs into the hide away unit which is located in the boot so looking to the rear of the car. I trailed the wire out of the boot and stuck it under the bumper and it seems to work ok.

assumed that velcro to the dash would be best but wondered if it was worth the routing to the back of the car. I reckon not!

Its only worth routing to the back if you have/want a rear roof mounted aerial.

Also having the antennae in the front means you get just a little bit more warning of a turning coming up!

most of the dash has a metal plate in it,behind the clocks is a plastic shild fit it between the shield and the dash ,no metal plate to block the sats..

I put mine directly above (and behind) the instrument cluster ( about 4 centimetres left of centre ) and I usually get 6 sats - never had a reception problem.

Also, it is really easy to get to there should you ever need to ?(why?). Just make sure you have the MB IC removal tools...

Mines stuck under the dash behind the instrument cluster too in my W210. Was the best place for it as the dash was more 'square & horizontal' compared to the rest of the dash where it slanted inwards. Also there wasn't any metal re-inforcement frames to get in the way and it slotted nice behind the soundproofing material which also keeps it securely in place ! :)

In a document I read (which was printed out from WIS) for upgrading the Audio-20 to COMAND-APS in MY2005 W203 C class, they suggested above the instrument cluster.

The document said, cover the underside of the GPS aerial (A203 820 09 75) with felt, remove the foil from the upper side, and push it in in the top of the dash board above the cluster (have to remove cluster first!), where there is some space.

Normally we just leave ours on top of the dash because it's swapped between vehicles - being BlueTooth thats quite easy.

i assume the cluster also has to be romoved?
You assume correctly, unless you think you can get the antenna between the cluster and the dash without removing the cluster? :)

:( i dont thin i can shude!

Maybe i'll just hold it above my head when driving...thats what autos are for. :)
That will only work if you have a panoramic roof or the sunroof is open! Maybe I could interest you in a hands-free solution such as a GPS hat? :D

The clusters just push out (unless you have the MB hook tools, then you can pull them out with the hooks). To push out, get your hand behind it (a little akward) and push.

I guess the position they recommend is the highest point of the dash !

how much is said hat? Will it work if i have a 'hoodie' on? :)

as long as it doenst make me look ridculous i'll take one.... :D
the GPS signal will pass through plastics and fabrics without problem, unless it's a chainmail hoodie you should have no problems with it ;)

to be honest I found that you only need to put the steering wheel far away and as low as possible to the dash and you can remove the IC - but of course to plug it in to the back of comand it will need open heart surgery!

Good luck, let us know how many sats you get !! :D
