GPS Bluetooth Question

Just a quick update.
Tried it again today and it starts to work fine and then just shuts off. I reset everthing and it shuts itself off after a couple of mins everytime, I don't think it likes working the GPS when in remote SIM mode.
If anyone else could try it it would be helpfull for amwebby.

Can you clarify what actually gets "shut off"? Do you mean the BT SAP connection or the GPS?

I just arrived from a 20 minute test drive and my phone was perfectly fine connected with BT SAP while the GPS application was updating my position on the map.

Is your N95 updated (not sure if my phone is running the latest SW but it isn't old)? My BT SAP device is old, V1. And the navigation application I was using was this integrated Nokia Maps/Smart2go. I wonder what could make it different?

The map shuts down on the phone. I think it is because it is trying to connect to the internet to update the map. If the maps were pre loaded into the phone I don't think it would have a problem.
BTW the phone software is the latest, upgraded 2 weeks ago.

OK, if there is no map data for the current location, the phone would have to download it through GPRS but that again isn't available during BT SAP connection (I've concluded that the Peiker unit does not support GPRS dial-up through BT and even if it did, N95 is not capable of using another device for DUN, just WLAN). But I still don't see why the application needs to close.

I had the network connection active on my phone (used by the Maps application) and when entering the car, the application just informed that network connection is not available any more but continued working otherwise. Which Maps version do you have on the phone (I assume it would get updated with the phone SW update?).

That is interesting, I hadn't thought of the GPRS connection being unavailable. I have the map pre-loaded on Nokia maps so that should work OK. I'm intrigued to know if the Wayfarer Speed camera software has the same requirement for a 3G connection for the same purpose. If it can work on pre-loaded map that's fine. If it keeps going off to download information then it won't work. Anyone have any experience of this product?

I've just discovered that the Wayfinder products require a 3G or GPRS connection to work. As my company phone is still in the WAP world that excludes me from using this.

In addition the Wayfinder application requires a GPRS or 3G connection while on the move, which would prevent anyone from using it even if they did have 3G.

Road Angel are the only other manufacturer who do a mobile speed camera application but it is limited to a very small range of V60 version 2 Nokia phones.

So, it is back to Tom Tom Navigator.

You mean your subscription does not allow GPRS dial-up but WAP access point only? No "free internet browsing"?

Anyway, did you figure out where this Wayfinder needs internet access? From their FAQ I interpreted this is "only" needed for downloading the camera database. This can be set differently:

How often is the data updated?
The database on the server is permanently updated and the software on your phone synchronizes in a defined interval: You can choose between "no updates", "once a month", "once a week", "every start of the application" and the "online-mode". When using the "online"-mode the application permanently listens for new mobile controls. In general Wayfinder recommends to up date the data once a month which is also the default setting.

To me it looks like you might even be able to download the speed camera data through WLAN. At least one should be able to download it once with a subscription having GPRS access, and later one if one wants to update the database. Specifically the application does not seem to request location based camera info updates actively while driving.

Perhaps it would be good to ask them if it actually works with internet access only when not driving.

No,this from Wayfinder,

"Even when using preinstalled (downloaded) maps, you still need to connect to the Wayfinder server in order to receive route information (the route you have calculated, indicated by a red arrow, the points of interest etc.) Wireless device users are provided with continuously updated real-time content and geographical data via the wireless network using GPRS/3G to even relatively small-memory devices such as the mobile phone. Searches and route calculations take place on a server, which has to be accessed using a GPRS/3G-connection."

A design error in my opinion as it prevents anyone from using a SAP BT connection in their car at the same time as using the phone for GPS. I have advised Wayfinder of ther design flaw.

N73 + TomTom + SAP all works fine together

Reading the handbook for my Nokia N73, which I have connected in my car via SAP Bluetooth, I came across the following:
"Several Bluetooth communications can be active at a time. For example, if you are connected to a compatible headset, you can also transfer files to another compatible device at the same time."

If true this should mean I can install Tom Tom Go software on the N73 and connect to a Bluetooth module at the same time as being connected to the SAP Bluetooth module.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work?

Sorry i didn't see this thread before now.

Answer to your question.......Yes it does

Just to confirm to all those wishing to know, my Nokia N73 simultaneously connects to my SAP V2 device whilst running TomTom Navigator 6 connected to my TomTom GPS receiver.

I purposely de-activated the sleep mode on the phone - this may make a difference.

I have also had plenty of times when im active on a call whilst following the moving map on my N73.

After extensive testing I can confirm this works brilliantly. It is java so will work any java equipped phone, hooks up to my BlueNext GPS unit and operates while connected to the SAP cradle.

It has no need for a network connection and the best bit is the speed camera database is free from these folk: http://www.scdb.info

This database is up to date and it loads into Google. Here's a shot of the UK.
