I just started manouvering into a space today and when I applied some lock (not full) a groaning sound was audible and a slight vibration was present.

It was fine on the way to work, but a quick foray to the other site and back and now the car does this. I ventured round the car park and whenever I steered this groan and vibration are now there.

I looked under the car and no "vital" fluids are leaking AFAIK.

Check the PAS fluid level.

I had a slight PAS leak.
It told me when the level was getting down by whining at me when the reservoir level was low.
Probably due to the pump drawing air bubbles.
Top up the reservoir.
Should cure the groaning.
Then look for the leak.
Cheers.

I drove home without any further problem.

I checked the level and it all seemed fine. I will keep tabs on the situation as if it happened once, it will happen again.

Could there be air gaps in the pipelines and that the system need bleeding?

Could be, there were no leaks anywhere in the car. I found it strange as it happened once, when backing up into a space and then I drove home and the car was fine.

Not meaning to alarm you , but this is similar to what just about the entire front end of my car has been rebuilt for without sucess in getting rid of the noise.

40 days in the workshop and counting.

What?

The entire power steering circuit isnt that complicated. Either the pump is shot or you have air in the system. Why so long to troubleshoot?

I just fixed mine recently, same symptoms, the high pressure hose was not only leaking but also drawing in air. The power steering fluid in the resevoir was getting all frothed up and the groaning was air in the system.

Expensive hose (£70), but an easy DIY job.

2x new racks , new power steering pump. Complete suspension and brake rebuild. New brake pads and lots of testing and they can't solve the noise.

:(

After reassembly, it takes a while for the air to fully get out of the system.

It took a day or so of driving for the noise to fully go for me. What power steering fluid are they using?

I hope they know not to use ATF.

I wonder if they've tried moving the hydraulic pipes to see if they are vibrating on something.?

I saw a very nice E320CDi taxi being used in Glasgow recently.....looked just like your car...

was that the same one with the huge dent in the passengers side door and the massive scratch down the drivers side?

Nope..

im assumeing they have tried everything the amount of time they have had it. I must have let about 10 techs at 3 dealerships hear the noise including worshop formen , master techs and service managers and nobody says ahh its .. they all look puzzled and say .. " oh , ive never heard that one before"

:(
