I've been tearing my hair out trying to get a decent quote for a W208 CLK 55 AMG.

Tried:

1. elephant
2. first alternative
3. directline
4. adrian flux
5. tesco
6. moneysupermarket
7. confused.com (web site does not work, and has not for the last 24 hours)

And best so far is elephant at £1200. All others were more expensive and required trackers.

Any other suggestions anyone?

Those with Group 20 insurance cars, I am especially interested in the identity of your insurer.

Thank mucho,
SEAN

I'm using Tescos for my E55 AMG. I have no tracker fitted.
I had previously used Norwich union for gp 20 insurance cars.

Mine is with admiral. Has tracker fitted, but have never recieved a discount for having it.

Granted, my cars not quite a group 20 but i found "More Than", to be the cheapest by far.

I tried all of the ones you tried also but "More Than" beat the best of the rest by well over £100

I found them by using the autotrader insurance search facility which Pluggers kindly put me on to. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/CARS/mo...ance-centre.jsp

Insurers

When I had the Skyline I used A Plan.

They got me the best deal then and have continued to do so ever since on all of my cars. In fact I have full NCB on my Merc and they have mirrored the same NCB onto the insurance for my Exploder with is group 17 according to them - just a nice touch that they brokered in order to keep me with them last time.

They do a family fleet deal for me where I get fully comp for SLK and Exploder, protected NCB, etc, for £1000.

Oh, never needed a tracker either, just a Cat 1 or Cat 2 (can't remember which is the highest) alarm for teh Skyline and factory fitted alarms for the MB and Ford.

If you want a number and contact, pm me.

Cheers

You might try quote line direct they have had my business for the last few years. The first year I used them, they took my policy to Lloyds of London to get a serious quote for me.(£1300 vs £3500+ ) I had suffered three accidents and a ban at the time.

The useless morons at Norwich Union just accepted liability on my behalf as it was cheaper than fighting two of the accidents, and the third one was an un-insured plebe that had borrowed a customers car to impress the girlfriend only to run it into the back of my Saab  So I would not personally use Norwich Union as although their claims policy was quick and without paper work it cost me several thousand pounds over the next few years in hiked premiums :( I am paying £750 a year for my SL320 fully comp including business mileage :)

Not sure how old you are, how many miles this is for, whether the car was garaged, etc, etc so it's tricky to know if this is a good or a bad quote. I'd also guess that E1 isn't the cheapest post code in the UK, so this could have quite a bearing on it....

If you want a reference, I paid about £1500 for my M3 (aged 30, garaged, ~15000 miles, £47k value, 3 years NCB, with a Tracker, and no accidents) with Tesco, then the following year about £1100 with Liverpool + Victoria with no change (other than my age + NCB going up a year) who didn't need a tracker fitted.

My X5 (which is also group 20) is currently insured with First Alternative (who didn't ask for a Tracker, even though it's got one fitted!) for about £850 - 5yrs NCB, aged 32, £65k value, 18k miles, garaged.

How much are you paying for your C240? My experience would suggest paying about 50% more for a group 20 car than a group 14/15 car.....

Sean
I am afraid that its probably London and E1 as others have said along with your age. I have quite a good broker that was very good regarding my (so called mods) factory fitted options. Let me know if you want the number. They reduced my premium by near £150 without being asked.
Sorry forgot to ask is a cab?

Cheers

Hi Sean,
I note that you show your address as London, which is not good insurance wise. A lot is going to depend on age, No Claims Bonus and the state of your driving licence.

Tracker or similar is getting to be a requirement on vehicles that insurance companies designate as high risk (perhaps for theft) or above a certain value. Usually they do not offer a discount for having it. They simply will not provide cover.

If the premiums are too expensive then perhaps you might consider a lesser powered choice of vehicle. The AMG range are excellent and I can understand why you want one.

For a laugh I entered a new Porsche Carrera coupe on the Directline Quote. Fully comprehensive with protected no claims was £518 with £150 excess. or CL65AMG £474.60p with £150 excess Seriously, I dare not joke on this because the figure seems outrageously cheap. More physio would be required to get me into it, but by crikey its cheap.

Regards,
John

I just tried to get a quote on More Than and they refused to insure me????

;) :D Obviously one of us is a clean living honourable person, but who? :D

Take care,
John

IMHO ~ £1200 for a £££££ car that is in the group 20 insurance bracket is not excessive.

Coupled with the fact that you have a E1 London postcode (nothing to knock your area, or any, but London is notoriously expensive for insurance)

If it were me, and I had already justified the cost of a 5.5 Litre AMG (fuel consumption, running costs (tyres, parts etc), plus purchase price) then I would go for it :)

It's only £100/month. Whatever car you buy you have got to insure (even your C240 must cost something! ;) )

So...just take away from the £1200 what you currently pay, and ask yourself if you reckon you will appreciate an AMG enough to justify the extra (easy, decision made for you! :D )

Obviously all IMHO only!

Cheers,

Will

Oh, and £1200 is nothing compared to the depreciation that the original purchaser would have suffered in 30 seconds leaving the dealership on day 1 lol! ;) :D

Cheers,

Will

Thanks all for the very useful and helpful feedback.

The cost for the C240 is £500.

Tesco quoted on line (£1400) but a tracker is required.

I have 7 or 8 years NCB, clean licence, do about 11k miles (all social), am 39 and the car is parked in the secure underground garage directly under the building I live in.

I am getting the CLK whatever happens ... I am addicted to it already!

In truth, £1200 ain't all that bad. I just hate paying more than I have to for insurance.

Will report back as soon as it is finalised.

Thanks again.

Morning,
Well done, and I am pleased to hear that you aregoing to get such a wonderful car.

What do you think has put the loading onto the vehicle.

Is it:
1) Location?
2) The Underground parking?
2) Your age?

Or do you have minor problems with your licence. Forgive me for being curious, but it is sadly part of my make-up. (I'm a nosey b*gg*r) can't spell beggar

Regards,
John
Now dreaming of owning a CL65AMG

Sean
I think Shadwell loads the E1 area. Wapping where you live is expensive dockside apartments but its all the area on the other side of Commercial Rd I think that loads the area. I had the same problem in SE16 with it being very expensive for insurance.
For example 4 bed det house in Kent Home Insurance £160 a year. One bed flat in SE16 is £300 a year.

Cheers
Ian

Sean,

glad you are going for it anyway - CLK55 is a lovely car, and the cost of the insurance will soon fade away to that V8 tone!!

Go on John - at that price for insurance it would be rude not to!! You know you don't want to spend that £150k on a place in the sun - a CL65 would be MUCH more exciting!! I was all set to get a CL65 myself, but it was the insurance cost that ruled it out for me.... :p  ;) :p

I must stop this dreaming, I must stop this dreaming, I must stop this dreaming

dreams are meant to be fulfilled!!!

my licence is completely kosher, and clean. I think the loading is all down to the area. but that's the price of having the Thames outside your balcony ;)

I'm insured with Hastings Direct. Age 32, Location Gloucestershire, Car w208 CLK55 00 with Tracker, parked on drive, 10K per annum mileage, full No Claims, clean license(not for much longer I suspect ;) ) premium is £1080.

Could have probably got it a bit cheaper but was so eager to pick the car up, i could not "waste" time on the phone :D
