Hamilton to join MB F1

I hope so...

Strange that the news doesn't appear to have been managed as (1) Michael deciding to retire, so then (2) Lewis signed to fill his seat.

As a Ferrari man (just for F1, that is- roadcars lost their appeal when every other footballer got one), I feel sorry for Michael, and though I maintain respect for Lewis as a threat to Ferrari success, I'm relieved that he didn't come our way.

Lot of people questioning Lewis's motives, but I remember similar about Michael's move to Ferrari and we all know how (after a few agonising years) that turned out!

"We can grow and rise to this new challenge. I believe that I can help steer the Silver Arrows to the top and achieve our joint ambitions of winning world championships." quote

Nothing but belief.
There is nothing in the way of evidence to suggest that LH is capabable of this.

That Eddie Jordan bloke may act the clown...but he does know a thing or two:devil::eek:
I agree with Brundle that Hamilton is probably the fastest driver in F1 and with a coat of Mercedes maturity and a sprinkling of Brawn stratagey....I suspect Lewis will deliver:)

Alonso would never have allowed it. And Ferrari listen to Alonso.

Yes, but MS fought his way there coming via sportscars. LH has been nurtured and pampered all his life by McLaren - it's all he knows.

Hamilton is clearly one of the top 3 drivers in F1 and the only driver who Alonso admits to fearing on the track. McLaren for all their 'winning mentality' have only won 1 constructor's championship and 3 driver's championships in 20 years. To me his move to another team was inevitable and a good thing!

And in 2014 the whole game changes... I wish AMG Merc and Hamilton the best of success!

Nothing but his one F1 World Championship win and the fact he regularly qualifies on Pole and wins races...

As for McLaren nurturing him and favouring him, they are business not a charity, if he ever didn't deliver he would have been out on his ear - like every other driver that hasn't made the grade in their driver program.

I don't particularly like him, but there is no denying his talent behind the wheel.

But would you choose him over SV or FA?

Fastest, probably not the most complete. But who was availble to Mercedes and not nailed into multi-million contracts?
Given a fresh environment, a renewed determination and a good Mercedes car he can be champion again.
Nice move my Mclaren to sign Perez...best of the new boys;)

I have a feeling that LH may be disappointed:

New engines set to be scrapped - Hindustan Times

Reading between the lines it looks like Bernie will cut a deal with the FIA to give them a prestigious new HQ - at the expense of the teams, naturally - but the old engines will stay

Who'd bet against it?

I think a move was necessary for both parties. Trouble is for McLaren LH is too fast in raw pace to simply give up. And for LH McLaren has been too good to leave given the paucity of alternative optyions. The impression since last year is that the chemistry had gone off.

I would like to see Ross Brawn at the top again - but I don't think LH is the driver to do it unless he grows up quite a bit more. Maybe the change of teams will kickstart that evolution.

That cuts both ways though, Mercedes have only won two construction championships as an engine supplier. Once with McLaren in '98 and with Brawn in '09. On neither occasion have they really seemed capable of building on that success.

I think over the last 6 years the finger points in more than one direction.

I wonder what the situation would have been if they'd not recruited LH in 2007 and simply had FA in combination with say HK.

My suspicion is that they would have had the WDC in 2007, 2008, and possibly another during the period of 2009/2010/2011.
