Handbrake question

brake :(

My variant...:

Firmly step on the brake pedal with left foot.

Put gear shift lever in P.

Fully engage parking break with right foot.

Lift both feet, remove key, and exit vehicle...

Surely use the right foot to apply the brake pedal and the left to apply the Parking brake??????

Either that, or I work in a circus...

I trained my left foot to brake a long time ago - it's not difficult at all and gives it something to do sometimes... :D

My parking brake is activated and deactivated by right hand (or deactivated automatically if I forget).

The highway code says you must apply the parking brake on an unattended vehicle.

no person shall leave, or cause or permit to be left, on a road a motor vehicle which is not attended by a person licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and any parking brake with which the vehicle is required to be equipped is effectively set.

parking brake is defined as a brake that can hold the vehicle stationary on a gradient of at least 16% without the assistance of stored energy.

In last something years, I have driven quite a few miles in USA. I believe that over 90% or their cars are automatic, and the use of an additional 'handbrake' is very unusual, they all just shove it in park... Could well be why there's a whole industry based around fixing transmissions LOL

Does your parking brake really automatically deselect? Should my 2013 W204 facelift do this?

Yes, when you press the accelerator with the parking brake on, it will release it for you.

I usually release it myself but if I forget...

From my manual:

Ensure that you do not depress the accelerator pedal unintentionally. Otherwise the parking brake will be released and the vehicle will start to move.

Couldn't tell you if a W204 should do it but have a look in your manual for it or just try it (obviously with nothing in front of you!).

I'll try in the morning. If that's the case, I might start using it.
