Have the wheels come off for Tesla?

Weren’t you the one who said your son bought an EV and had to apparently move house because of it? He has free charging at work or something like that, but as he does 200-300 miles every weekend whilst never driving past a charger there’s no option bar moving home… Then when people questioned that you never bothered replying? 👀

Those are the kind of statements that people feel the need to reply to. ;)

EDIT: Ah yes it’s here: Advice regarding driving to France and Switzerland | Driving/Incidents/Roadrage

I think that it's an amazing endorsement of EVs, that someone prefers to move house (and to a worse area, it was said), over giving up their EV. It's even more amazing that the wife is onboard - their EV must really be something else :thumb:

You forgot Hayes, Novell, Netscape, Kodak, and Polaroid.

But have the wheels come off for Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, or Google? No, not yet anyway. These 5 Tech Giants are still going strong.

Some make it, some don't. But it's impossible to predict the future by knowing in advance which is which (if anyone could, they'd be billionaires).

Tesla might become the 6th Tech Giant, or they may disappear altogether. Only time will tell.

I didn't forget them. The point is about was about innovative companies who couldn't maintain that innovation as the market accelerated.

If that nice Mr Musk was here, he'd make the case that it was never his intention to create one of the world's greatest car companies, only to showcase the potential of energy and battery technology. (There are endless videos of him making precisely this point).

It's naive to think that Tesla could evolve smoothly into becoming a Toyota or VW. Almost as naive as believing that the future of private travel is just the electrification of four wheeled vehicles. (Think of what happened to the 45rpm record, and the typewriter.)

That said, it’s “Vorsprung durch Technik” that looks the greater risk, as their new incoming CEO reluctantly admits. How can a bureaucratic century old German company move forward through technology, when the Chinese and Koreans have already proved their incompetence for the world to see ?

Grundig TV's are history. How long before Audi joins them?

The first ones only had 60 mile range when new....
.Here's the 2011 Long-term test review from Car Magazine.

The quote it as having an 80 mile range. (Tthe 2019 Leaf on 22k miles that I gave as an example has THREE times that range)

Well, seeing as your asking................. his house is up for sale, his company are moving premises and he no longer has access to the free chargers as the the new premises do not have any available and he cannot charge from home. Last week they travelled to England for a weeks holiday, the day before he had to sit in a supermarket carpark to charge his car for the journey south. He was able to book a charger at the holiday complex while he was there, but after returning home had to again find a charger in a supermarket to charge up again.

Not my idea of car ownership, and I told him before he got it it was a mistake, but thanks for asking anyway.

As I said on the other thread, it's all down to having a nationwide network of fast chargers.

My EV is currently parked in a small village in the Swiss Alps. I am not worried about starting my journey back home (when the day comes) with 100% battery, because there are fast 150kW chargers at the Shell Recharge station on the motorway down in the valley, all I need is to have enough battery to get to the fast charger, then spend a few minutes charging to 80%, and off I go back to sunny England.

But of course, if we live in a country where an EV owner can do a long drive between two remote locations with not a single fast charger along the route, then life with an EV can get difficult.

Again, once the UK has the fast charging network, EV drivers will be able to stop at a fast charger along the route at the start of the journey, and won't have to bother with charging the night before.

Fair enough, but the fact he keeps persevering with it makes me think he quite likes his EV. :)

Obviously I don’t know which area he lives in, but I think it’s unlikely he didn’t pass a decent rapid charger on his way to/from England. There’s probably a rapid fairly near his house that can recharge his car in 30 mins or so.
