Having Your Car "Detailed"

Given the muck, gunge, stones, car park dings etc etc etc that we all encounter on our travels, I think that it is CRAZY to take a car off the road for four days, and spend hundreds having it detailed.

On the other hand, if I were picking up an Aston Martin, I would have it done tomorrow.

Good luck with your lovely new car, DSLiverpool - send us some piccies to show these doubters they are wrong.

As I've posted previously. If you need to ask, you wouldn't understand.

A picture of the Golf from the thread I posted earlier.
If people genuinely can't tell a difference then they shouldn't ever wash a car, or maybe not own one...:D

Forgive my ignorance but what do they actually do to remove the swirls?

Is any paint removed (i.e Tcut!) or are they applying a micro think layer of polish/wax/miracle cure that "fills" the swirls?

I'm just curious how they arrive at such a dramatically different end result.

What would be really useful are before and after shots in natural light, Rather than the specialised lights that are there to magnify the swirls.

First clean the paint well, then machine polish with fine polish. By using a rotary machine it actually heats the paint a bit and causes the scratches to re blend as well as being polished out, so less paint coat is removed.

Ahh I see so they are effectively using very very fine abrasive polish/cleaners.

That makes sense.

Without wanting to sound catty, how about people actually folowing the links posters spend time collecting, instead of complaining.
Then that can see for themselves.

The special lights highlight defects to ensure a better job is done. They are only regular worklights.
Fortunately the one in the link in this post is the real deal though...it's called the Sun..;)

I'll give it another go..:)

That is a different link to the Golf one, which was what I was commenting on:D

I would stay away from http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/, as it is more addictive than crack cocaine and you end up spending a lot of money very quickly and your days dissapear! :D

I'd say it's nice to detail your own car, but I'd ceratinly pay for someone to spend a day detailing my car. Any more and it get's too expensive.

The detailingworld site colour scheme is very similar to this site

The site is addictive BUT it is also very informative - one of the best around for "petrol heads"

Its a good site,

I'm on there and look at various things, but the before and after shots make me smile.

Its not 'that' hard with a bit of time and effort to give your car a good clean. I love cleaning our cars its sort of time out if you want. Still say black or dark colours much harder.

Like anything costs are all relative, while I wouldn't pay anyone as I like cleaning them if you have it and will be pleased with the results all good :)

Yes I use that site too - got my foam lance from there via a helpful guy and have bought foam etc too.. :D

Its fun...... saving up for a polisher... :D

That's the sort of thing Gurcharn does day in and out. He's done more Veyrons than anyone else AFAIK.

But no conclusion, just loads of slagging off with no facts.

Mind you this is a cracking post..

( THIS IS A MADE UP STORY JUST FOR FUN AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OP POSTS OR THE DETAILER IN QUESTION)

My friend lost his job and had a RMS issue so could not afford to pay for it, the car was also looking a bit tired but alass he could not afford to get it detailed either.

So he booked it in to a detailers, on the way he stopped the car reset the trip and took pictures, why he did this was a bit strange as the detailer was still 25 miles away.

Any way upon picking up the car he showed the detailer the photo's he had taken when dropping off the car, odd the detailer thought I only drove it a few miles to dry it off after the wash the rest of the time it sat on tick over.

Any way the trap was now set and my friend now refused to pay out due to the 25 miles showing on the clock.

stage one was compete a free detail was had :-) now because the car was on tick over the Mpg was down at 9Mpg and part two of the plan was coming in.

"hay you dirty scum bag detailer monkey man" the friend said "you have thrashed my ******g car and blown up my engine"

"I am now going to get my car checked at the OPC for damage"

Ofcourse this was to plan the car had a RMS issue which needed sorting. stage 2 on said plan was now coming on quite nice.

Lucky the detailer was insured for damage and the insurance paid out for the RMS repair.

My friend was very happy , not only did his car look the best it ever had, the RSM was also fixed.

I wonder if the poster 'sledgehammer' kept saying 'I don't think I'm being unreasonable'...;)

Only problem with that is that a 996 Turbo has an old style engine which doesn't suffer from RMS. Ordinary 996's do suffer from RMS, as do Boxsters.

I do like to try and keep my cars looking good. I can't be doing with dirty cars, but the level to which any one person regards as acceptable is bound to vary.
The level to which the dealers clean the cars after service is to me unacceptable, but I'm not sure that I could spend £500 on detailing.
Last week I had the S Class in to be painted after some kind soul had 'keyed' it down the rear quarter some time ago. The paint job is great but they have managed to lightly kerb one of my new rear wheels......
If there is one thing I have learned it is that it is close to impossible to keep the car perfect if it is actually being used.
Everyone has to choose where on the line between concours and filthy is acceptable to them:)
