hi there, this is my first post, so if it's in the wrong place please forgive me.
i recently passed my car test and thought i'd treat myself to a lovely old merc. it has been a bit too cold and wet for the motorbike. anyhow i bought a 1990 190e petrol. it's amazing to drive for a 18 yr old car. it is very quite and smooth.
the problem is that the heater doesn't blow warm air out! it does blow and if i sit stationary there is some warm air coming through on the least powerful setting. however if i am moving along the heater only blows out cool air.
i didn't get an onwers manual so i'm not sure if im doing something wrong. i have the dails turned with the arrows facing up...................

any advice will be greatly recieved
kind regarsd

Does the temperature gauge show that the engine is getting warm?
If not, you could have a faulty thermostat.

Also check that the coolant is fully topped up - if it is low, there may not be enough to circulate through the heater.

the temp gauge works its way up to about 80-90o and is happy to sit there. even in traffic.
will double check the coolant level when i get home but i think that it is ok.
also is ther any onwers manuals on line any where? merc say they can not get them any more?

Hi tuff_les

Haynes does a workshop manual the book number is 3450.
This is for the Mercedes 190,190E &190D Petrol and diesel (83-93) A to L you can buy these in any good motor parts shop or Halfords.

hello,
i have got myself a haynes manual, and have a a good look through the section of faults and how to fix them but couldn't find any info on what to do if the heater isn't blowing hot air........
the other things that it doesn't tell you are thr other things that arn't quite right. i.e the sunroof. it goes up but not back, the haynes manual says take it to a dealer as it is to difficult

LOOK AT THE Haynes manual section on the HEATER in CHAPTER 11 BODYWORK not where you might expect to find it in the Chapter 2 COOLING SYSTEM section. As far as I remember the heater valve is vacuum controlled and if the the actuator is punctured/leaking it may not be opening allowing water to circulate thro the heater matrix. the matrix itself could also be choked or air locked. Try bypassing the valve temporarily with a short length of pipe to test if its faulty.

Sounds like the heater valve or flaps are not working with the dials or the heater matrix is blocked.

Check the temperature of the pipes with your hand.

It also sounds like fresh air is being fed into the car - when travelling you say the heater goes cold. Might be a flap/vent not closing
