Hi all, bought a 2006 A170 Manual for my wife and have a couple of problems. The car was bought from a garage (non-Merc) and has a 12 month warranty. I'm going to give it back to them to sort out a few things but would like to be forewarned in case I get fed any lines!

On the test drive it was fine but after we picked it up it's very, very difficult to get into first or reverse when the engine is running. With the engine off it's very easy though? I found a reference on AClassinfo about using the Gear Selector Reset procedure but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. Any ideas if I'm looking at something more serious?

A minor one (I think) is the rear wash wipe is pouring water down the back instead of on the screen. I assume this is just a loose pipe which they can fix fairly easily?

Thanks!

Hello and weclome to the forum :D

There is never a small problem if you have a 12 month after sales ticket, take it back with a smile and let 'em sort it out for free :bannana:

Welcome to the forum.

The rear washer is a common problem on the A Class, the pipe comes off the nozzle in the top of the tailgate. The pipes seem to go hard and are very difficult to put back on. I suggest heating it up or using a piece of rubber pipe to join the two ends together. A fairly easy fix if the garage doesn't do it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I have a slight concern about the garage doing it properly or just bodging something. They're not a Merc specialist and so far I've not been impressed that they've missed the rear washer problem, and I think they've messed up the bonnet catch too (it worked when I checked it and after they gave it a service it no longer opens). The guarantee is apparently through a warranty company so the initial stuff will be fixed by them but after that it will be through the warranty company.

Well, we got the car back last Friday (they had it from the previous Wednesday). They seem to have fixed everything and they put a new clutch in the car. All seems to be working fine and dandy now. I suspect all the work wiped out any margin they had made on the sale but fair play to the garage, they did it all without any complaints or mutterings. I'll probably still go looking for a Merc specialist when it comes up to it's next service though.

Update ...

The selling garage in question replaced the clutch which was fine until November. Then the gearbox started to "whine", getting worse and worse over time. Quite by accident I found a garage near me that say they are Merc specialists (was just there to have some winter tyres put on). They took the gearbox out, sent it away and it's had all it's innards replaced. Luckily the original guarantee paid for all of this. The underlying cause seems to have been that there should have been a plastic deflector under the bonnet that drained water away. That was missing, allowing water to drip down onto the gearbox casing, which got inside and wrecked the inside of the box. The piece of plastic cost about £10!

Obviously I've no way of knowing when the bit of plastic went awol, just really happy the warranty paid out on it.

Glad you got it fixed. Worth checking what they did at the rear with the wiper. My wife had the same with her B-class, and actually there was a revised rear pump/kit/pipe through to the front of the car released for the exact reason that another poster mentioned - the pipe keeps popping off. This must have been a right bugger to fit as the garage had the car for 3 days (main dealer) and they replaced a glow-plug, some trims, the poly-v belt and some other bits-n-bobbins.

Cheers,
Dan.
